I know Audley won the gold at Sydney in 2000 and Amir Khan got silver in Athens 2004, but before then it had been quite barren for British boxing success at the Olympics. So what exactly was the most successful year in the Olympics in terms of sheer volume of medals won by British boxers. I remember the Yanks cleaned up in 1984 and obviously the Cubans and Russians have had good years too. But what has been our best medal haul and what year was it?
I think the current GB squad we have got going to Beijing is the best we've had since I've been watching the Olympics. Good luck to them.

You're right. Robin Reid did win bronze, but he was the only British boxer to win a medal in Barcelona (although I think Peter Richardson beat Vernon Forrest that year to get to the quarter-finals). Richie Woodhall was our only medal winner in Seoul in 1988 when he got bronze after being beaten by Roy Jones. After that I am too young to remember the other Olympics. So I was wondering if other people can remember if we ever did have a really good year in terms of winning medals.

I'm sure that 1956 was Britain's most successful Olympic year in boxing.

Terry Spinks and Dick McTaggart won Gold.

Tommy Nicholls won Silver.

Nick Gargano and John McCormack won bronze.

Got to be 1908 Scrap, 5 gold medalists.

Britain has had 13 gold medals in all, and 9 of those were in the games from 1908 to 1924. Since then we have had 4 golds, Terry Spinks and Dick Mctaggart in Melbourne 1956, Chris Finnegan in Mexico 1968 and Audley Harrison in Sydney 2000.

Couple of stories from 1908 games in the heavyweight final Albert Oldman beat fellow Britain Sydney Evans, that was inside of 2 minutes . Albert had won his first bout inside of a minute. So won the gold inside of 3 minutes of boxing.

In fact in 1908 most of the boxers were British, we won gold silver and bronze at Bantamweight
, Featherweight, Lightweight and Heavyweight. At Middleweight we could only win the Gold and Bronze.
And the boxing contests were a bit of an afterthought by the organisers, they actually took place in October after all the other sports had finished, might have been all on 1 day as well

Richard Gunn at featherweight is i believe, the oldest boxer to win a gold medal at 37 years old, and if the current age limits stay in place then that will never be beat.

John Douglas who won gold at Middle was a top class cricketer, he captained England and won 23 test caps.

Oh well yeah 1908 was Britain's most successful year then.

There were a total of 42 boxers from 4 nations and 32 of them were British.

In terms of modern Olympics then I am sure '56 was our most successful boxing year and more appropriate as a means of comparison.

Really looking forward to this Olympics boxing, the team has got to be capable of a couple of medals.

Me too mate. ABAE have done a great job in getting this level of representation through the qualifiers. Let's hope the team can come back with a nice medal haul. It wont be easy but the preparations through qualifiers and multi-nation event will hold them great stead.

No idea about the timetable but hopefully we will treated to a dedicated highlights show.

I remember it well 1908, I was going to enter but was 45 at the time.

The times i have listed are all the times in Beijing when the fights are, you have to take away 7hrs from them to get the UK time.

I reckon we will do well this year

I think Gavin will get a silver/gold. Degale's got the hardest weight class

51kg is also a tough one

gavin & BJS defo best chance, 'easier' divisions and our two best

im going for

BJS = Bronze
Gavin = Silver

which is a bloody good achievement

Get the right draw, and Price can get a medal.
DeGale has the ability, but not sure he can carry it all the way through the rounds.
Gavin should come back with a medal.

Billy Joe Saunders has been in great form in the run up, if he can carry that on , maybe he can strike lucky.

Don't forget Bradley Saunders or Joe Murray who both won bronze in last year's world championships. Billy Joe Saunders is a great tip for the dark horse of the competition, it's his first major tournament and he could surprise everyone. But future world superstar Demitrius Andrade from the US will also be in the welterweight division and has to be favourite. David Price has a good chance of gold if he can stay injury free and not get hit on the chin too often. James Degale is one of our best boxers, but seems to under-perform in the major competitions. Frankie Gavin has to be another favourite to get gold if he can remain strong at the lightweight limit. Remember these boys have to make weight five times in the space of two weeks.
I think we have a really good chance to win some medals this year. Good luck to the whole GB team.

How did we do in 1948 when the olympics was held in London?

2004 British Boxing team had a 100% record.

Seeing as Khan was the entire British Boxing team .

Kudos to Khan then though, did well.
