I tend to agree, but it would have been a real struggle.theone wrote:The Rock would win a tough fought decision.
It's hard to rank Rocky because he was small for a heavyweight and not particularly fast...He could take a wallop and beat everybody he fought...It's not his fault they were old, not very good, or whatever...Ambling Alp wrote:Both of these guys are pretty even in most areas-Chin, stamina, defense (or lack thereof), punch rate etc. Punching power being by far the biggest difference.
Marciano would be much more dangerous against other fighters (those having an iron chin being the exception) than Chuvalo because he was a much harder puncher.
For those rare fighters who did have an iron chin it wouldn't matter much who they were fighting between Chuvalo or Marciano.
In a head to head battle it would be very close. Marciano would get hit a lot, but would be able to Chuvalo's shots for 15 rounds.
Chuvalo would also get hit a lot. He had a great chin as well, but even with a great chin would he be able to take Marciano's shots for 15 rounds. It's conceivable that Chuvalo get worn down in the late rounds from taking so many hard shots, but I would bet on him going the distance.
The most likely result would be Marciano winning a tough decision. 9 rounds to 6 or maybe 8 to 7.
Watch his fight with Cockell and tell us what you think.TheOneIsHere2008 wrote:It's hard to rank Rocky because he was small for a heavyweight and not particularly fast...He could take a wallop and beat everybody he fought...It's not his fault they were old, not very good, or whatever...Ambling Alp wrote:Both of these guys are pretty even in most areas-Chin, stamina, defense (or lack thereof), punch rate etc. Punching power being by far the biggest difference.

It just makes him hard to rate...
I do know Quarry and Chuvalo were tough men but not ATGs...And if their a person's benchmark that person must not think Rocky Marciano was that good...
I don't see serious people musing if a prime Kelly Pavlik could beat a prime Marvin Hagler...
He also retired at 32 so we never saw him past his prime like we saw Ali, Louis,Duran, Holmes, Ray Robinson, Foreman!, Archie Moore!, Ray Leonard, et cetera...Ambling Alp wrote:I think that you can be an ATG and still struggle with fighters below that level. I think Marciano would (and in fact did) struggle with fighters below that level. However, you can say the same thing about Hagler.
Hagler struggled with a fading Benny Briscoe, Marcus Geraldo, and Vito Antuofermo. Of course Hagler usually rolled through his opponents during his prime but you get the point.
Pavlik probably wouldn't be a good example, but there are guys that weren't ATG's that may have given Hagler a tough fight. (Say Gil Turner, Paul Pender, George Benton)
I think Hagler was a better middleweight than Marciano was a heavyweight and I don't think Marciano was the best heavyweight of all time. However he was probably Top 10.
The thing about Marciano that seems to be the least appreciated is that he was very consistent. On his best night, I wouldn't pick him against atleast 15 other heavyweights on their best night. However, everyone else had bad nights. Marciano almost never did.

Isn't that damning Rocky with faint praise...My2Sense wrote:Not only did Rocky have the harder punch, but he also had better defense and technical skill (relatively speaking) on the inside.
As said earlier in this thread, Rocky works him over on the inside to win a decision, or perhaps late stoppage (if he busts up Chuvalo's face).
How many other fighters ever stopped Chuvalo?TheOneIsHere2008 wrote:Isn't that damning Rocky with faint praise...My2Sense wrote:Not only did Rocky have the harder punch, but he also had better defense and technical skill (relatively speaking) on the inside.

Chuvalo could take a punch but he's hardly an ATG...
Not many...Foreman did...Rocky is considered the GOAT by some...He should be compared to Louis, Ali, Johnson, Foreman, et cetera...My2Sense wrote:How many other fighters ever stopped Chuvalo?TheOneIsHere2008 wrote:Isn't that damning Rocky with faint praise...My2Sense wrote:Not only did Rocky have the harder punch, but he also had better defense and technical skill (relatively speaking) on the inside.

Compared to Don Cockell's boxing skills George Chuvalo was freaking Gene Tunney!!!PUGZCAT wrote:Rocky Marciano would be in for a very tough night as he was never in the ring with anyone like George Chuvalo. Probably Don Cockell was the Marciano opponent that was the closest to George Chuvalo in style. Cockell stood at close range and threw and was a very good body puncher. Cockell won a relatively easy decision against Roland LaStarza. The down side of Cockell was, even though he had good skills, he didn't have great chin, and was more or less just an obese light heavyweight because of a thyroid condition and didn't have great stamina or strength or a hard punch. Cockell did have a respectable showing against Rocky Marciano until he ran out of gas. George Chuvalo was a lot stronger than Cockell, vastly greater stamina, better chin, a harder puncher and under rated as a boxer; he was ahead on points against Floyd Patterson after 8 rounds.
