A quick flick through my sky sports subscriber mag (billed as 'the world biggest sports magazine'...) revealed that Prizefighter 2 in newcastle will be broadcast in High definition.

Good news and hopefully the rest of the new seasons boxing on sky will be in high def. To my knowledge the only fights previously shown in high def in this country have been Hatton's last two.

The Khan PPV will also be HD but hopefully no-one will watch that

Is it much better in HD?

technically it should be no real difference since the fighters are most often shot from close range.
HD brings a new experience and improvement for sports shot from long range such as football, soccer, or tennis where individuals, ball, puck appear in very small.

Actually the difference is impressive. I believe the Sky Digital signal is 572p (or i, not sure), but for Sky HD it's 1080i. Using football as the prime example, on my 32 inch TV you can see player's facial expressions from a wide camera shot from the gantry. On digital you simply don't get. For boxing it's most useful for cuts and crowd spotting. However the sound is poop and you have to turn it up a lot louder than normal.

Also, if you decide on investing on a decent HDMI cable be wary of compatability issues as my TV refuses to play Camrbidge Audio cables. Took me three months to work that out.

Something to note is that Sultana also show certain shows in HD, but mainly golf and UFC. I haven't seen a HD boxing show on there yet.

Emerson, you may have been watching FFN on the HD channel but they weren't broadcast in HD, so you (and I) were not watching them in High Def. Press the info button to check whether you are watching HD.

The picture will be much better this time.

Watching Standard Def on the HD channel (incl previous FFN) upscales and slightly improves the picture but it has not been HD until now.

The difference is huge. The Hatton fights were stunning in HD.

Sorry, not true. Setanta have never shown ANYTHING in HD, because they don't have a HD channel.

UFC is filmed in HD but because Setanta have the rights over here we only get it in SD.

Setanta are keeping quiet about launching an HD channel. Not on the horizon at all, which really F*cks me off when I pay my HD subs and my main sport interests are football, boxing and UFC (all of which Setanta broadcast substantial amounts of)

Sorry dude, I'll have to disagree as Wales and I were sat in a pub watching Setanta golf in HD on Sat night.

Also when you watch WWE on Sky Sports 1 (channel 401, not 408) using your HD box it does the same thing (you will notice a "HD" banner in the top corner of your screen to advise the picture has been upscaled).

It's true that Setanta don't have a HD channel, but they can still show programmes in HD.

It could've been 720p, instead of 1080i, but it definately wasn't 576i or 576p.

Okay we'll agree to disagree but I'm 100% certain on this. WWE is filmed and broadcast in HD that is correct. Setanta golf is not HD I can guarantee it. You do need a HD channel to show HD output. I'd bet more money than I have on it.

Sorry poodle, but I have recorded several Fight Nights on Sky Sports HD1, including Murray v Meager and Oakey v Francis (in fact I recorded both SS1 and HD1 of this one as I was covering it and wanted to validate what I had reported) and they both seemed HD quality.

Could it be that the picture is upscaled slightly on HD1, but isn't true HD?

These are all from American feeds though, so I'm not sure how the our HD shows compare.

I don't really want to see Valuev in HD.

I remember watching Morales v Pacquiao III in HD and the difference was amazing. Not only was it much more satisfying to watch a fight in perfect quality but you could see punches landing/missing that you weren't totally sure about before.

Never got to see a Live fight in HD yet though.

Yeah, the missed punches thing must be a great improvement.

For those thinking of moving to a HD TV, plasma handles motion much better than LCD. The main drawback is a reflective screen which isn't good in bright rooms with a lot of sunlight.

Isn't 1080pi HD 1920 pixels across? Those screenshots look about 700 or so across.

The difference is gigantic, from the sweat flying to the 'orrible pores in the presenters faces.

The 32" is 1080p (LZD85). That's why the 37's cheaper.

Depends on room size though, poo. I have a titchy lounge so had to make do with a 1080p 32inch.
