The article appeared in yesterday's Townville Bulletin and quoted local promoter Dennis Clancy. Wasn't much substance to the story and the likelihood of it coming to fruition are Buckleys and none.

The only marker we have is that Valuev won an eight rounder over Mirovic in 2003 on points. According to Boxrec it was close in all rounds. It was Valuev's 33rd fight. Mirovic was KOed by Meehan in four rounds in 1999.

Not much to go on, but that is all.

Valuev said, after beating John Ruiz in the rematch, that he will be defending his title against someone ranked in the top 10 by the WBA. Kali Meehan is ranked 3rd, so this fight seems possible from that perspective. I don't really know much about Kali Meehan, but surely he'd accept a World title shot?

Here's the link of the Townsville paper

BOXING history could be made in Townsville in the near future with Australian boxing journeyman Kali Meehan pushing for a world title fight in North Queensland.

Meehan, a Fijian-Australian based in New South Wales, has strong ties to the North through his friendship with local promoter and trainer Dennis Clancy as well as family connections.

And he moved into contention for a WBA heavyweight title fight after knocking out America's Dominique Alexander in Germany in a WBA eliminator over the weekend.

Meehan has ties with famous promoter Don King whose production company – famous for managing Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Evander Holyfield – is eyeing off Townsville as a possible venue for a title fight between the 38-year-old and Russian giant Nikolai Valuev.

Australia has never had a heavyweight champion and as King's No. 1 fighter, Meehan looms as a genuine chance of making history on North Queensland soil.

He now has a record of 35 wins, 29 by knockout and three losses.

King is understood to have already contacted Townsville City Council with an offer to host the event which would be a major coup for the city.

It has been a remarkable fightback for Meehan who last competed for a world title in the European-dominated weight division against World Boxing Organisation champion Lamon Brewster back in 2004.

He lost that fight in a split points decision, but has now fought his way back into contention for a world heavyweight title.

"It's something he's been chasing for years ... he should have won the fight, they gave the split decision to Brewster but we watched the fight and Kali nearly put him away in the eighth round and then was all over the top of him," Clancy said.

"He kind of went into a lull for a year or two then and then he bounced back and he had those five fights over the last couple of years and built himself back up into the ratings.

"Now he's fought that eliminator on the weekend and given him the shot against the Russian."

If the fight is hosted in Townsville it would mean worldwide exposure through pay-per-view TV coverage as well as the typical Don King promotion and hype.

"It's a worldwide event, not just Australia," Clancy said.

"It will just open doors and put Townsville and North Queensland on the world map in different countries all over the world."
