When you consider his speed, cleverness, terrific punch and chin, Carnera would have a huge advantage over the others because of the intimidation factor.

Jaclem, are you serious? I've actually never seen Carnera fight, but the conventional wisdom is that he was a woeful fighter. I'm not dissing you, I'm just interested.

Ahem....gensu...from time to time I ry to add a wee dash of humor to these weighty discussions...and every time at least one person has taken me seriously.
The reason I said Carnera was because he was on the list in the first place. I didn't know if it was a joke or not, but it should have been, as you are of course correct in your assessment of Carnera.
the "reasons" I gave for his winning ..speed, puch, etc..were all things that he was notoriously bad at.
I usually count on Tomato Can to explain this when someone takes these things straight, but it's Sunday and maybe he's taking the day off.
Carnera

My granpa used to tell me about him, I am italian, and all I heard when I used to go home is hearing from my granpa stories from Carnera. Also I saw pictures of him and read his book. I thought for back in the days and even today his build was just amazing, and he was a really strong man, plus he became champion of the world, and became the first heavyweight italian champion, but not the last one, Francesco Damiani back in the 90's, and lost his title against Ray Mercer.

HE HAD AN AMAZING BUILD AND BY TODAY'S STANDARDS HE WOULD BE AN ADEQUATE HEAVYWEIGHT. ALTHOUGH MANY OF HIS BOUTS WERE FIXED, OTHERS WERE NOT -SUCH AS THE LOUGHRAN FIGHT, WHICH HE WON ON SHEER SIZE. CARNERA WAS A NICE MAN WHO WAS USED BY THE MOB BUT LET'S NOT JUDGE HIM TOO HARSHLY. HE WAS NOT IN THE LEAGUE OF THE LOUIS AND DEMPSEY'S, BUT HE TRIED HARD, BOXED FAIRLY WELL, HAD SOME POWER AND A LOT OF HEART.

Wher's Lou Savarese? Went the distance with George Foreman and blew away Buster Douglas ( somethink Mike Tyson couldn't do)!

You must be joking, Jaafar....Tyson number two? Where does that place Evander and Buster Douglass?

tommy gunn, judging by that list of yours and ur screename, i'll bet my car that your a whiteboy.
mills, hearns was awesome but leonard and hagler both beat him convincingly. and having toney at the top is just absurd.
here's my top 6
1 sugar ray robinson
2 roy jones - yes, he's beaten every opponent EASILY and for that his quality of opposition has become very underrated
3 sugar ray leonard
4 ali
5 pernell whitaer
6 tie: ricardo lopez and jc chavez

I can't be that firm about the order and after the top three I might pick three others...but, right now, thinking about fighters I actually saw..live or tv:
1.Sugar Ray Robinson
2.Ezzard Charles (as lightheavy)
3. Joe Louis
4. Sandy Saddler and Willie Pep (can't rate one above the other)
5. Ike Williams
6. Roberto Duran
Never saw Charlie Burley, but from first hand accounts I'm sure I'd have him in if I did. I did see Archie Moore...live..now damn, I'm wondering if he should replace Williams or Duran. the hell with it...these are the first ones I think of..and six places aren't enough.

....see what I mean...I'm back already. Duran is in as a lightweight only......Gavilan much better at Welter. Ali might be in top ten, except I don't think heavyweights as a division are as talented as the smaller fighters, so he'd be in top ten heavies only.
Somebody stop me before I add more!!!!

1. Scott Ledoux - It is an outrage that Muhammed Ali got away with cheating his way out of the title defense like that after he ducked him for so long. Then, he never game him a rematch.
2. Eric Esch "Butterbean" - It's too bad he wasn't in his prime when he finally got his chance against Holmes.
3. Corrie Sanders - I'm sure I don't need to justify his position on the list.
4. Tommy Morisson - A tragic case of AIDS ended his unprecedented reign at the top of the boxing world.
5. Gerry Cooney - Was destroying Holmes until "Lady Luck" intervened. I guess that's the way it goes.
6. Randy "Tex" Cobb - It's hard to believe he dropped off the face of the earth after he was robbed in the infamous decision (possibly the worst ever) against Larry Holmes. Then again, Larry Holmes never gave "Butterbean" a chance until "Butterbean" was past his prime and he also never gave Gerry Cooney a rematch.

Newbie wrote:1. John L. Sullivan - No one can really dispute that he was the greatest boxer of all time. The art of pugilism has deteriorated drastically since his legendary reign.

3. Gerry Cooney - Was destroying Holmes until "Lady Luck" intervened. I guess that's the way it goes.
4. Tommy Morisson - A tragic case of AIDS ended his legendary reign at the top of the boxing world.
5. Jack Dempsey - His record speaks for itself.
6. Scott Ledoux - It is an outrage that Muhammed Ali got away with cheating his way out of the title defense like that after he ducked him for so long. Then, he never game him a rematch. If he had, Scott Ledoux could possibly rank higher on the list.
Some of the lists previous to this one seemed a bit silly but everyone has a right to their opinion except this idiot. Bozo's list IS interesting for a variety of reasons:
1. All heavyweights despite the fact that the best fighters are usually found in other divisions.
2. No champions except for Sullivan. The best fighters of all-time would probably win a championship.
3. And my favorite omission. Not a black or latino fighter has been included in this morons list because as we all know blacks and latino's have never had any great success in this sport.
So not only is Newbie an idiot, he is probably a racist too. WAIT...It all makes sense now. How can you be a racist without being an idiot as well? Sorry Newbie, my mistake.
