No chance of this happening.

AMIR KHAN’S new trainer will keep his job — despite seeing the lightweight getting knocked out for the first time in his career.

Khan recently replaced trainer Oliver Harrison with Miami-based former Cuban Olympic coach Jorge Rubio.

The switch backfired in spectacular fashion when Khan was knocked out after just 54 seconds by unbeaten Colombian Breidis Prescott.

Promoter allegedly, who had Prescott way down his list of opponents, revealed: “Rubio said he knew this guy and that he would be a good opponent.

“Rubio may be a really good coach but he’s a bad matchmaker.

“Derek Gainer was the original choice but for whatever reason he decided he didn’t want to fight.

“We were scouring around for an opponent and Jorge came up with Prescott’s name.

“We discussed it and that is what we decided to go with.

“At the end of the day, whoever Amir fights, the buck stops with me.

“When he is winning I am a great matchmaker and promoter.

“When he loses I take responsibility and Amir was caught cold.

“If it had gone a few rounds who knows what might have happened — but he never got into it from the start.

“Let’s take nothing away from Prescott — he doesn’t look a bad fighter, does he?”

Rubio was brought in to sharpen Khan’s defensive skills after the Bolton Bomber was floored by opponents considered light punchers like Michael Gomez, Willie Limond and Rachid Drilzane.

The sensational defeat will re-open the debate about Khan’s ability to take a punch — a debate which started when fighting as an amateur.

But Prescott exploited Khan’s trait of dropping his right hand by unloading a dynamite-packed left hook that exploded on the side of his face to put him on his backside.

Khan staggered to his feet at eight and was allowed to box on by referee Terry O’Connor.

But when Prescott connected with another powerhouse punch there was no beating the count for a second time.

The Bolton Bomber’s first defeat in 20 pro fights has put the brakes sharply on his aim of a world title shot within a year and he will have to carefully rebuild his career.

Khan, 21, admitted: “Critics have said I fight with my heart.

"Now it is all about using my brains. I will go back to the gym and work hard to improve. I’ll also sit down and watch the fight video but I know the mistakes already — a bit late now, I know.

“Jorge and myself are going to work on them and I am going to come back stronger, definitely.

“I’ve every confidence in Jorge. Training went really well but I got caught flush. I definitely want a rematch.
“I knew he had speed and I knew he had power. It was a massive gamble taking this fight. I took it to see where I was and that happens but I’ll come back stronger.

“I knew exactly what was going on after the first knockdown but just ran on to the shot.

“We worked on stuff in the gym and Jorge said not to do that, because he’s a big hitter. Prescott really is a big power puncher and this defeat has made me realise that it is the pro game and there are going to be tough fighters out there.

“I was always in a rush to become world champion and maybe that is what was meant to happen.

“I’m still young, it is not like my time is up. No excuses the better man won — I was caught cold.” Another big question Khan has to face is whether the fight public has gone cold on him with radio phone-ins jammed by calls gloating over his defeat.

Khan will try to take comfort from a few record-book facts as Howard Winston recovered from defeat in his first world title bout to rule the featherweight division.

And, of course, Joe Bugner lost his first pro heavyweight fight to go on to become a boxer fans loved to hate.

Maybe Khan will become a similar type of figure to Bugner as fans are split on whether he can deliver his promise of winning a world title. To rehabilitate Khan in the ring, he will ideally now face an opponent who can take a few shots but not give a bang back.

That would, of course, re-open another debate about the quality of Khan’s opponents.

But the Bolton youngster is in no doubt now that the jury is still out on his ability to deliver the goods against ‘live’ rivals.

What has concerned me watching the fight again is the reaction of Khan's new trainer - he applauded as the finish blow was landed. Yes, it was a nice shot and its nice to show sportsman ship - but still.... not really the reaction I would like.

Getting caught cold seems to be the line they are taking - Give him the rematch in my opinion, and then we won't have to hear about khan again.

I will be astonished if allegedly allows a rematch to happen, even more-so if he were ot let it happen in the near future!

IMO, the manner in which Khan was defeated is likely to leave lasting effects. I think its a strong possibility Khan will be gun-shy from now on. In a rematch, especially if it happens soon, Prescott would light Khan up like a christmas tree.

I know it was only 54 seconds... but I think its going to take a pretty damn special fighter to beat Prescott - someone who has it all. Prescott seems to have decent hand speed, good balance and Khan caught him nicely twice and he didn't flinch. He is massive for the weight, you've got to be ina and out and either avoid taken his shots (if your chinny) or absorb them.

I can't see Khan beating him ever, cause he has the handspeed to catch a warmed up Khan.

Prescott looked amazing against Khan. Speed, power, accuracy, composure, etc. - but against Abril he looked awful. The jury's still out on him as far as I'm concerned.

LOL. I can't believe some people trying to talk up Prescott. The guy is an ordinary fighter.

Prescott has a chin and power, it will take a good fighter to beat him no matter how ordinary his skills are.

Mayorga was a two weight world champion, who beat Forrest twice.

Have you seen Prescott in any other fights?

Of course Khan is going to say he wants a rematch. What else can he say? "I don't want to fight Prescott because I'm a pussy and I know he'll hammer me again!"

I don't think he was "caught cold." He buckled after Prescott landed a nice little jab. If you're getting wobbled by jabs. You shouldn't be a boxer.

Khan doesn't what a rematch nor does Warren. Khan would get KO'd again by Prescott and that would be Khans career over.

There is still a slight chance Warren can milk the mugs for more money yet. He'll have a couple of come back fights against featherweights with 1 or 2 KO'S. After 5 fights when there's pressure on Khan to step up. He'll fight at domestic level against Murray and get beat. Proving Khan wasn't even at domestic level.

I would give Khan some credit if in his next 3 fights he was against Murray, or even Thaxton. No way in hell will he be fighting Prescott in his next 5 fights. If he does. I’ll be very shocked.

Truth is that most brits can't cut it at international level, just look how bad Thaxton looked against Romanov who isn't a patch on Diaz, Campbell, Pacman or Casamayor despite what we are told.
Remember how John O'Donnel and John Murray were respectively stopped and given a dodgy decision against Mexican tomato cans last year, now we have Khan sparked out in less than a minute.

Bright future for British boxing innit? :-?

Yes add Nicky Cook, now a "world" champion and Hunter both thororughly outclassed last year.

Lets not forget "weight drained" Haye, the saviour, was on queer street against a 37 year old in active French man..... notice all of the talk, by the fans, of him being dead at the weight stopped in March.

And then people criticise Ricky for being average.

It's horrible when a great British fighter from the past is mentioned in a British national newspaper, a fighter sadly deceased, and his name is mis-spelt.
How do his family feel reading this?

It just seems weird some of the stuff that's being spouted.

"I'm a great matchmaker when Khan is winning" - that's not the point of a matchmaker is it? Surely that's to make pick 'em fights, fights that sell tickets and where you go hoping someone will win but not knowing - that's equally poor matchmaking to picking a guy who absolutely disposes of your protoge.

Secondly, how can he come out with Rubio is a great trainer but poor matchmaker? If Rubio suggested the name it shows he must know something about Prescott - if he can't even coach Khan to not take any shot Prescott wanted to throw - and he could have caught Khan with absolutely anything he liked - then he must be an appalling coach. Khan's defence was simply non-existant, how he gets caught with a telegraphed left hand in the first place, and rocked by a straight jab?

Awful paper defence + worst chin of almost any pro = getting knocked out way before World level as we've seen. Gavin Rees would trouble Khan, and IMO that's saying something!!!

This is a result of our prospects being pampered, they are brought through by promoters feeding them with doormen from Blackpool etc. who aren't interested after they get hit hard. How is a young fighter going to learn from that, put them in with dangerous Latin journeymen to gain experience and then put them in with other prospects to improve their abilities.

Look at Khan, put in with a load of overmatched, featherfisted part timers or has-beens and then they throw him in with a big punching Columbian prospect, what did they expect him to do when he hasn't learnt a thing since he turned pro? He still fights like he did in the Olympics.

I think you're right; there's no way that F rank Warren would let Khan anywhere near Prescott for a while yet.

They wouldn't let him near Carl Johansson after that let alone Prescott.
