Reading the Ron Borges' 80's heavyweights article in the latest BM got me wondering just how well off Don King is.

He's been around forever.

Big money makers off the top of my head are:

late career Ali, Tyson, late career Holyfield, Holmes, JC Chavez, Terry Norris, Trinidad, late career RJJ, Sanchez, Jackson, McClellan,Nelson, Arguello, Gomez and Warren in court

The man even took a cut of a WWE promotion using Tyson's image rights. Add all the fan clubs his family ran, the 'manager' cut his son Carl got and all the other stuff on the side (commercials, video games) and he must be well into the hundereds of millions of dollars right?

I realise the man had a few setbacks, like the Norris settlement, but he still must be better off by far than any other promotional outfit.

Money =Power so it makes me wonder with all that buying power how he's allowed himself to become the peripheral figure he now seems.

I've read he's worth a billion dollars, but also a "mere" 500 mill. Either way, he doesn't have to worry about paying his fuel bills in his old age!

He's been marginalised by the emergence of GBP and the power bases in Germany too. King is arguably more closely tied to the bouyancy of the American heavyweight picture than most too.

Still, if you had a shyte card and need it to sell with a week to go, you wouldn't phone Oscar, you'd phone the Don.

I think the signing of MAB said alot about his current stature in the sport.

Best boxing book I've ever read is the late Jack Newfield's 'Life and Crimes of Don King'. The Don is portrayed as an absolute, unashamed scumbag.

I was really surprised by Ron Borges' piece, which seemed to cast him in some revisionist light.

However, there is no one like King for bluster. He was on Radio 5 yesterday building up Federer v Murray - he called Murray 'the 007 of tennis'. Genius.

Shock-haired King (to hide the horns) is said to have jumped over the prostrate body of Mike Dokes after the previously unbeaten Dokes was flattened by Gerrie Coetzee in the States in 1983, but he didn't.
What did happen is one of the funniest exchanges in boxing history.
"I'm going to remain here," said Coetzee to Reg Gutteridge after his huge title win.
"Romania?" said Reg.

He should spend some of his millions buying Liverpool and install Carl King as manager.

After 'deductions' Robbie Keane would be taking home 2 grand a week.

And he'd still be overpaid.

Watched a hour long Don King programme on the Biography channel ages ago, as he was kicking the shit out of this bloke who owed him money the Rozzers turned up, Don gave the bloke one last boot in the head in front of the Old Bill and the bloke died. How come he didn't serve 325 years, like in alot of the US??

I've never seen the Don King Biography shown since, so I'd imagine that King took them to court (his natural home) to stop them showing it.

Didn't he get acquitted over fiddling the insurance for the training expenses for one of Chavez' cancelled fights?

Then pay for the entire jury to go to the caribbean

Partly, because King was 'packing' and sought to stomp the guy instead.
