Barrera headed to China?

Mexican ring legend Marco Antonio Barrera recently inked a multifight deal with Don King Productions at DKP Headquarters in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Word is that Barrera inked a five year pact and he is expected to land a fight for the WBC interim lightweight title on November 7th in Chengdu, China.

Yep so I've heard.

I think Barrera is going to go on a bit of a world tour cashing in on his name.

Surely cannot be a five year deal, five fight perhaps, but five year, find it hard to believe than Don would sign him for five years at his age.

But .... wtf happened for him to leave GBP as a partner to sign for Don 'No longer the' King?

An enormous frigging cheque.

Can't imagine what else it would be.

I would imagine the GBP wouldn't give him a multifight deal as he was near the end of his career, and Don offered him what he wanted.

Shame Barrera didn't retire after the Pacman fight, he is clearly past his best, has been in a huge amount of punishing fights, and is surely a very rich man, but as ever the lure of the ring is so hard to combat.

It's the very lucky few like Lennox who have enough interests outside of the ring to live without boxing, most simply don't know what to do with himself.

Very true - I suspect Anna Kournikova ( Oscar de La Hoya ) and B-Hopalongnowson and Sugarless Shane wanted to keep all the money for themselves.

Barera should retire - its a dangerous game.

He did "retire" after the Pac fight, but I think he's determined to be the first Mexican to be a world champ in 4 weight divisions. Can't see it happening, though, as he's not far from being "shot", 135 is loaded with talent and MAB is too small for the weight. He could be a good future opponent for Amir, though.

PS: I didn't really mean that last bit, but Khan seems to be mentioned in every thread at the moment.

It is an interesting move on lots of levels. King needs some leverage with the hispanic market, he has some lightweights with belts and MAB makes for an attraction fight. I also think this CHina thing is a rich market to tap into to. MAB has the history to help sell to that market.

Despite his age and mileage you would presume he could nick a belt at 135.

Don King signs Barrera, does it still matter?

Isn't he fighting Kobori for the WBA belt? Then, if he wins, a rematch with Marquez or Casamyor.
