POUND-FOR-POUND TOP 10

1. Joe Calzaghe - Super-middleweight
Newbridge (45-0, 32KOs)
Calzaghe outpointed Bernard Hopkins on his US and light-heavyweight debut and faces Roy Jones Jr in New York on 8 November. Britain's greatest ever boxer?


2. Ricky Hatton - Light-welterweight
Manchester (44-1, 31KOs)
Hatton defeated tough Mexican Juan Lazcano in his first fight since losing to Floyd Mayweather and should have enough to beat IBF champion Paul Malignaggi in the autumn.


3. David Haye - Heavyweight
London (21-1, 20KOs)
Haye destroyed Enzo Maccarinelli to become undisputed cruiserweight king and is now targeting two-belt heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2009.


4. Carl Froch - Super-middleweight
Nottingham (23-0, 19KOs)
Froch could finally get a world title shot against former middleweight king Jermain Taylor later this year. A big ask, but not beyond him.


5. Nicky Cook - Super-featherweight
Dagenham (26-1, 15KOs)
Cook boxed beautifully in outpointing Alex Arthur and claiming the WBO super-featherweight crown. He can now look forward to a decent payday when he fights again in December.


6. Junior Witter - Light-welterweight
Bradford (36-2-2, 21KOs)
Witter was woeful in losing his WBC crown to Timothy Bradley - his dream fight with Ricky Hatton looks like it will now never happen.


7. Clinton Woods - Light-heavyweight
Sheffield (41-4-1, 24KOs)
Woods looked a spent force in losing to Antonio Tarver, although his camp claims he was suffering from a strain of meningitis and he may fight on.


8. Enzo Maccarinelli - Cruiserweight
Swansea (28-2, 21KOs)
There are still plenty of options for Big Mac despite his emphatic loss to Haye at London's O2. The Welshman returns to action later in 2008.


9. Kevin Mitchell - Super-featherweight
Dagenham (27-0, 20KOs)
The British and Commonwealth champion says he will not fight good friend Nicky Cook and so will have to find and alternative route to the top. Will need to tighten his defence if he is to make it.


10. John Murray - Lightweight
Manchester (25-0, 13KOs)
With Amir Khan so cruelly exposed by Breidis Prescott, could the British champion, and not the much-hyped Bolton fighter, be the man to make a splash on the world stage?

Rediculous to have Murray and Mitchell so high up.

Lynes, Munroe are two definates to be ranked above them.

Haye should be above Ricky IMO

P4P is mythical, it's just a bit of fun based on peoples individual opinion. Like for example a lot of people have Calzaghe top 5 P4P, yet I don't have him or any british fighter in the top 10 World P4P

I've had a big (though not mass) debate with Derek Bilton of Sporting Life about Munroe. On his (Bilton's not Munroe's) p4p list he has a top 10 then around five 'honourable mentions' and Munroe is nowhere to be seen...yet Appleby is! He wouldn't budge which is his perogative but he couldn't convince me either?

And Froch No. 4?! A great talent but who's the best opponent he's beaten? Tatevosyan, magee? Way too high.

To be fair it is only a British P4P list and it's not as if we're overflowing with talent at the moment is it.

Of course but everyone from 5-8 have beaten better people than Froch. These things come in cycles anyway, we'll be fine when the next generation come through. There's more boxing in schools now (non contact) than there's been in ages.

Murray and Mitchell are no way in the top 10 but the rest is fair enough.

The same Bilton that had Gene Tunney ranked number 4 or 6 or something best heavyweight of all time.

A little bit. His record is still good for a british fighter. Alex arthur, John Thaxton etc all could have been in the top 10.

I took Scott Harrison out of my list, so I don't have a problem with that.

This list does suck though. How come these people who decide to do a one of top 10 usually include two crap choices for the bottom two places on their lists?
