Born again Ian "Dappa" Napa challengs for the European bantamweight title held by Belgian strongman Carmelo Ballone on a big bill at York Hall on October 17.

Napa, a long-time flyweight, makes his second attempt at the coveted title, having dropped a close but unanimous decision to Italy's Simone "Boom Boom" Maludrottu in Dagenham early last year. It was a mixed period for the Hackney stylist - his fourth defeat in five outings - but he was fighting in excellent company and he was fighting regularly, after long spells on the sidelines at fly. His persistence paid off when he secured a crack at the vacant British bantamweight title against former conqueror Jason Booth in Wigan in July last year and pulled off an impressive points victory. The 30-year-old, Zimbabwean-born Napa has impressed further as champ, rattling off three impressive defences to secure a Lonsdale Belt outright, including a decision over St Pancras hard man Martin Power to avenge another previous defeat and his first ever career stoppage: a seven-round retirement stoppage of Bristol's useful Lee Haskins.
His improvement is obvious.
Slick, clever, short, good at covering up, countering and nicking the points, Napa has real experience to go with his skills these days, a pro 10 years. Ballone, however, the champion, is also seasoned after eight years as a pro and held Maludrottu to a split decision in November 2005 and comparitively that reflects better on the champion. Napa was unanimously outscored (although it was always competitive). Ballone was fighting in Italy, too, which means he was basically robbed.
It was Ballone's first stab at the European title, and when the champion subsequently vacated to concentrate on a world title shot (which he lost), Ballone picked up the belt with an eight-round stoppage of Romanian Eugen Sorin Tanasie last December and retained with a 10-round stoppage of Spain's Valery Yanchy in May. He's won five in a row since Maludrottu - all of them inside the distance. The Maludrotto fight, incidentally, is Ballone's only excursion outside of Belgium or Luxembourg but he still looks a handful at at 21-2-1 (10), his only other defeat by disqualification when he flattened an opponent on the break in a fight he was winning. The draw came in a six-rounder in just his second pro outing.
Ballone is 32 but not a worn-looking 32.
The champion's strong, aggressive style should blend well with the punch-picking Napa's, perhaps a bit too well. This one is sure to go the distance, given Napa's 'smarts' and you wonder if the European judges will be impressed by Napa's style. We all remember Damaen Kelly, in his home city of Belfast, dropping a terrible verdict to Maludrottu in 2006.

The tall Midlander lifted the magnificent Lonsdale Belt in March in Barnsley when he floored and outscored Stoke's rugged Chris Edwards, in something of an upset, using his height, reach and counterpunching ability to good effect. On the same bill, however, earned his shot by narrowly outscoring Doncaster's Jamie McDonnel - a man who stopped Bell in three rounds in December 2006.
Back then, Bell looked all set for Palookaville as he lost for the third time in four fights but pulled it together and has now won his last seven. Still only 23, the champion is a good boxer and a sharp hitter, and the same can be said of switch-hitting Haskins, who looked a great prospect in his flyweight days but then moved up to bantamweight and was stopped by Ian Napa and Tshifhiwa Munyai, running out of steam both times. The creation of this fledgling super-flyweight division, however, gives him a chance to emulate his flyweight form, where he won the Commonwealth title with a second-round blasting of Tanzania's Anthony Mathias and made one defence (going the full 12 rounds) before weight problems forced him up to bantam. As manager Chris Sanigar puts it, "I don't think it's Lee's last chance, but it's probably his best."
Still a young man himself at 24, Haskins is quick, unorthodox and probably the harder hitter of the two protagonists. He represents a daunting first defence for the gutsy, improving Bell, who may not have improved enough to win this.

Pompey thumper Tony Oakey looks to get back on track when he takes on perennial Liverpool prospect Courtney Fry for the vacant English light-heavyweight title.
Oakey was relieved of his British light-heavyweight title in June in nine thrilling rounds by Hampshire rival Dean Francis of Basingstoke. Stocky and strong, defending in his own Portsmouth backyard, Oakey looked well on his way to victory against a badly marked-up Francis when the quicker, dangerous Francis suddenly turned it around with some meaty left hooks. It was the first time Oakey had ever been stopped. He was gunning for the Lonsdale Belt outright, too.
Former amateur star Fry has lost only to respected Jamaican Ovill McKenzie in 12 pro outings (points) - a man he had previously beaten - and steps up for the first time since switching to the money game back in March 2003. Five years? Fry possesses plenty of natural talent but lives in a 'failing' city and lacks connections, and long spells of inactivity, and even spells as a sparring partner, are the inevitable upshot. Last time out in February the 33-year-old Fry showed what he could do when he halted the previously unbeaten Tony Salam in six rounds in Salam's own backyard at York Hall.
The tall, skilful Fry has the counterpunching ability to outbox the stumpy Oakey in the early going, and simply needs to win this if he is to fulfil all his amateur promise; he struck gold in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, boxed in the 2000 Olympics and also picked up three ABA titles.
However, one can see tough Tony - one eye on another shot at the British title and that magnificent Lonsdale Belt for life - ultimately forcing his way to a decision.

Why is Courtney Fry still scheduled to fight on the 2nd October when he has the Oakey fight lined up a few weeks later?

There has be a number of changers to this bill. C. Fry has pull out and has be reported to the BBBof C. due to a managerial dispute.But we still believe that this is a very strong show .
