Surprisingly, this is really good at the moment. No world beaters but a lot of solid,evenly matched fighters. At the top is Kali Meehan with Mark Demori & Bowie Tupou both going well ( not against great opponents) in the US.Big Bob and Col the coalminer are on the way out while Haumono, Hoppa, Nasty Boy Briggs and Lepai are all going well. Adam Forsythe has some raps on him while Kirby, Kennedy & perhaps Kim Heta all go ok. When Ben Edwards gets out of the slammer he may figure also. With Cameron & to a lesser extent Joey Wilson in NZ plus everyones favourite import Chauncey mainly based there a lot can happen.
Some thoughts on what could happen down the track would be welcomed. We need a bit more action on the forum so I thought I throw this in.

Add in Pieter Cronje and its getting some real meat.

Taking all that in has the Australian heavyweight scene ever been healthier than now?

yes but are they going to fight each other. hope so.

plenty of 'if's', even if you do call them fact. We have what we have, and it's better than it's been. no complaints here. they have a chance to get stronger as a group if they use each other. time only will tell. as far as the 'if's' go, Darcy would have ktfo Bob any day

fact is that without haumono and hopoate the heavyweight scene is dead. they alone are bringing buzz to the local heavies and no one can deny that.
and they are not exactly failed rugby goons as they were in the top tier of players.
when people have such hatred of these guys who actually seem quite humble it can only be jealousy. DD

I don't know about the skill level of the HW's right now, but as stated above, coz of Hoppa and Haumo there's more buzz about it.

The top talent need to fight each other more regularly (or once!) for it to gain any credibility.

It was great to see "the heavyweight champion of Australia" mentioned in the press. Regardless of standard. It is certainly better than hearing OPBF and IBF interim and the like

I agree totally. Whether you like them or not, Mundine, Hoppa and Haumono are the ones keeping Aussie boxing alive at the moment (in the eyes of the general public). If these boys weren't around Aussie boxing would be dying a slow death.

eavyweight scenen at the moment has a chance to really become popular. If the likes of Briggs, Huamono, DeMori, Leapui, Wilson, Hopoate, Mirovic, Cronje There are some good matchups to be made and it could really help some of our younger Heavies if they want to have a crack overseas.

Also if you throw in Meehan Welliver and Cameron there are guys there that our guys can take the next step up against.

hey Funso- i dont think people here are blowing smoke up the arses of the heavyweight fighters we have just being positive about the fact there is interest in the scene.Like it or not heavyweights seem to be the cornerstone of the general publics interest in boxing and considering that interest(aside from the period of the green/mundine rivalry)has been vERY low for some time it is good to see. with the fact there is soon to be boxing on commercial telly(ie for free)it is all steps in the right direction.
Glass half full NOT half empty mate.not saying any of these blokes will set the world on fire but if as others have suggested they start fighting each other more often then we could be set for some good fights and perhaps find someone who does have the goods to go further than domestic level.
as a matter of interest-how do people rate this ben Edwards bloke??he obviously has power but when he is out of the slammer if he continues to box will he be a force???

Suprised there is not more talk about Welliver / Solis. Win or lose Chauncy will be a bigger name than ever once he comes back down under. I think he's going to show well for himself and his stock is going to rise.

There is a story in today's Sun Herald about Hopoate fighting Shane Cameron. Cameron's people want the fight to be in December but Hopoate is still recovering from the damage to his hand suffered in the Mirovic fight.

Hopoate's people want to fight Cameron in mid 2009 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre to coincide with the Bledisloe Cup Rugby Test.

They almost have to don't they. Surely there is more money to be made by fighting each other than fighting nuffies and there aren't that many heavyweight thai's or Argies to fly in anyway...

Perhaps Channel 10 would be interested in showing a heavyweight round robin type of thing over a few months???

I thought you would be concentrating on that big Cuban kid you are fighting in Ireland this month. Unbeaten with 4 KOs in 5 fights he looks a bit of a handful.
