Calzaghe Vs Roy Jones Jr - your thoughts?

I'd have much preferred to see JC Vs Pavlik and I'd have much preferred to see JC Vs RJJ about 8-9 years ago, but I think I've got passed these 2 barriers now (i.e I've stopped chucking my toys out the pram) and I'm starting to look at the fight for what it is - 2 Legends at similar stages of their careers, who are both very entertaining to watch in the square ring - and I'm starting to develop abit of excitement for the fight. Both fighters have got skills to burn and I think their styles will gel very nicely and make for a fantastic spectacle.

I'm finding it difficult to put in a definate prediction for this fight, I suppose logic would loosely point to Calzaghe coming on strong down the straight and sealing a points win, but it's not something that I'll be risking any of my hard earnt on!

RJJ looked impressive against Tito last time out (or was it Tito looking shit?) and I've heard that he didn't look too shoddy against Hanshaw and Ajamu (I don't recall seeing the fight, can anyone confirm) in his previous 2 outings, so I'm expecting a decent contest especially in the first half of the fight!

I recall reading that RJJ said "The only way to beat JC is too knock him out, as he throws a ridiculous amount of punches", so I'm expecting RJJ to be sitting down and loading up on his shots early on.

Watching the RJJ and JC's interviews on Bunceys Boxing hour yesterday made me realise that I can be a right miserable cuunt about certain fights if they're not fighting the opponent that I'd chose for them (How dare they!!), I think I need to chillax abit....unless we're talking about Hatton who still grips my shit!

Jones hasn't been entertaining since before the Ruiz fight!

The only way I see Jones winning is by KO, he still has a decent punch, but I don't see him letting his hands go often enough to stop Calzaghe. You can't discount him reaching into the past and producing the kind of shot which stopped Virgil Hill.

Athletes as special as Jones was don't forget how to do these things, they just can't summon them as often.

Calzaghe by shut out, near shut out, or stoppage. Jones is too far past it and I'm not fooled by the performance against Trinidad.

In their primes I would have gone for Jones by KO.

Hard to know what to expect with this fight, can't say it sets the pulse racing by a long shot. Great historic setting though, and I'd love to go and see it at MSG...but who knows, it could be a hideously boring fight, with Jones dancing and Cal chasing for 12 long rounds.

Jones is a shot fighter though, isn't he? We saw that a few years back - you don't suddenly get it back, when the punch resistance goes like that, no matter how good he looks at the press conf.
Trouble is, Joe's hands are shot to pieces too, so seems he might not be able to expose the Jones chin - unless they hold out for one last time, that is.

Hope so, because a stunning Calzaghe KO would drive up the price and force the real superfight, and the one we'd all like to see, against K Pavlik.

This must be the tenth thread we've had on this but I'll once again say that JC will win on pts, with Jones doing ok early with flurries from 1-6, slowing down from then on. I don't think he'll get stopped though.

Calzaghe will win around 117-111 in my opinion......

I agree - just saying power is the last thing to go, and Jones can certainly crack hard. I thought it slightly alarming the way that Hopkins was able to nail Calzaghe with right hands all through the fight, personally I thought he probably deserved at least a draw when I scored it.

Jones' punch resistance is not great, and he does look very gunshy now, but never say never, this is boxing, and one punch can change a fight.

Calzaghe's punch power is not much of a factor any more - he just can't put the leverage in with those chalk fingers of his. However, Jones has a habit of laying on the ropes these days, and It's possible Joe just swarms him and batters him to a stoppage.

Mildly intrigued by this fight, although I suspect it will be very boring.

Terry D wrote:It will be a huge pile of steaming shite. Maybe three rounds of punching and then that kerazy showboating both men are fond of. Calzaghe will bounce on the spot for 2 minutes at a time, then Jones will do a chicken walk back to his corner, say "I got this" and then piss away another round. I'll hear bird song, think "That was a waste of time" and then watch the repeat the next day, it will still be shit.

The excellent Bunce show made me a little fired-up but the fight is a dog turd. W12 with very little action and a pointless rematch. Joe walks out for the rematch, says "Even 'ad the feeling' you bin 'ad" and belts out 'Anarchy in Wales (someone has just stolen the sacred leek)'.

Possibly a third meeting down the line. Equally as boring and pointless. We will all watch it.

A common grammar error on these forums that annoys me.

It should have been, "PAST".
Not worse than "could of" or "should of". It is alarming how many people must be actually saying "could of" and "should of" when they speak, as opposed to "could've" or "should've". Why the fcuk should "have" be shortened to "of"?

Anyway we digress, I'd be surprised if this fight is the snoozefest that some (Terry D) are predicting. JC usually has an all action style and RJJ's main priority isn't going to be stopping JC working as it was for Nard. Jones might go into survival mode later on in the fight when he's breathing out his arse, but I've got high hopes for the first half of this fight at least

It all seemed to come down on the Saturday evening and night, but didn't it fcuking come down!! the 2 previous years it seemed to rain from start to finish, which was worse IMO

We had a stream running through our tent at one point this year, the joys of festivaling eh?

Yeah that's true, I tend to forget Roy has a big punch on him, it's been so long since he used it.
One of those type of fights that'll build up as it gets closer I reckon..

The only was RJJ can win this fight is by KO, as there is no way that he will outpoint JC.

Yes he still (well into his 40th year) has quicker hands than even the swift fisted JC, but RJJ has always been one for quick single shots & that's not going to be enough to beat JC IMO.

If he tries to KO JC, he may get lucky, but more likely he will get tired: I believe that RJJ's stamina has diminished in recent years.

I can only see an unanimous points win for JC, with RJJ going in to survival mode for the 2nd half of the fight & probably stinking the joint out.

I agree with that. Jones will just be looking to go the distance and collect his pay cheque.

And Joe, of course, is well aware of that which is why he has taken the fight!

Calzaghe wins on points and goes on to reach the middle rounds of Strictly Come Dancing '09. Enzo says: 'If he'd not been sent home, he'd have annihilated the competition over three hard dances.'

Froch also has an opinion: 'It weren't what I'd call dancin'. He's lucky 'e didn't fight me, else he'd still be doin' the disco now.'
