Officially retires.

He did intimate that he would most likely retire, he now has! Glynn Evans did the interview in BN this week.

Richard as a fighter was smooth with a capital S and was - in my mind - the best of the Light Middles from 2000 onwards.

Was a bit sad for me to read it because he was still looking very much a live fighter - but as he says 'why get beat up in 6 rounders for 6 round money!'

My favourite fights from Williams - the SHANNON TAYLOR beat down and PAUL SAMUELS II steady breaking down!

Had the boys round for the TAYLOR fight and we almost went through the floorboards!

Wow i didnt even know Richard Williams was still around. He fell off the map when he got beat by Martinez again. Richard was a solid talent but he just never fought enough. I dont think he ever had a proper world title shot either. Such a shame what happened to our light middles..

I remember talking to him about getting tickets for the Martinez fight in Manchester. I told him then that the guys is tasty 44-0 as an amateur and only 1 loss as a pro and that's to Margarito!

Is a shame he did not get a top 3 title shot. No bias here - but his smooth style and the way he would throw the left hand to the body in close - roll in under the opponents jab the right over the top was a thing of beauty.

I will put on Richard Wiliams Vs Paul Samuels II later today.

Last fight against Howard Eastman was a brilliant fight imo.

Yes, he did!

He said that was the hardest he had ever been hit - but the fact he went straight back in with him showed the type of fighter he is.

Williams was a class act - I just don't understand the boxing politics - he was one of the best in the UK and could have done well at a higher level, but just didn't seem to get the fights he deserved.

I agree - I am just watching Williams Vs Samuels II again.

Boxing stinks imo - technically RW was top class and pity he did not get more opportunities.
Wayne Alexander-Takaloo-Gary Lockett all fought for a Top 4 belt and no disrespect - RW was better than all of them.

Sounds like he is doing work for the local authority on project geared towards mentoring/advising the youth of today.

Politics of boxing stinks and I doubt he will miss that!

For you information, Richard Wiliams knocked down Martinez twice in the first fight and ran out of steam but lasted until the end of a fight he took on shot notice and struggled to make weight.

2nd fight - Martinez was a clear conclusive winner.

Martinez is WBC number 1 ranked I believe and unbeaten bar the Margarito fight yes ANTONIO MARGARITO!!!

Go back to chasing ladyboys!

Hatton is in the small percentage that get to pick and choose who is easy and avoids who is tough while banking Millions!

You seem to casually forget the massive and glaring diffrence in OPPORTUNITY! Richard Williams STILL had a job and was doing meals on wheels to make the ends meet. Ricky was fed the silver spoon made millions off defences of the WBU under the auspices of WORLD TITLE action - bearing in mind the WBU was an organisation run from a cottage in Norwich that had as much credibility as George Bush`s tenure as president -

Ricky has NEVER had to fight for anything. It was handed to him on a plate. When he was supposed to fight Witter he made up a plethora of excuses and 10 years later the fight STILL hasnt happened and now has no meaning. Thus he denied the hardcore British fans the fight we truly wanted as well as making a nice buck of us at the gate.

You also conviniently forget that Martinez has had a VERY succesful career and apart from 1 loss to Margarito is treading the exact same path Ricky trod.

Boxing is a tough game. The WORKING man will ALWAYS get respect. Ricky beats the drum repeatedly that he`s "one of the lads" but how can he be considering his whole career has been wrapped in cotton woll and is entirely hinged on a win over a fighter who had one foot in retirement.

Lets put it a different way - Lockett has just retired with 4 houses and a business (good on him!), Williams is doing meal-on-wheels to make ends meet....

I know that Williams was beaten by Eastman and that he didn't have any chance of fighting Pavlik, but IMO Williams would have given Pavlik more of a run that Lockett did.

From what I understand - all due to politics and breaks.

I'm not trying to slate Lockett at all, the blokes done well and I think everyone is happy for him.

Richard Williams was a Good Fighter, more importantly He was a nice Guy. Wish Him well whatsoever He does.

Any other fighter in the World would have been stopped on the cut Hatton had against Thaxton.

Richard is not doing meals on wheels these days.

Sounds more like Career advice/Social Work community based projects now.

He said he did not make loads of money from Boxing - but I doubt very much he left the sport without getting something out of it. There were a lot of problems with TV and the back room stuff which stopped him being as active as he would like not to mention mystery viruses.

Also,remember that SKY adopted a NO MORE IBO title fights but let Fwank serve up WB who???

Sky also changed the money they were paying out.

Still - not many fighters leave the sport when they are still able to compete so well. he had the ability to achieve more, but he achieved more than he thought he would have at the very start, he was happy to be Southern Area he once said, but then realised he could do more and he did!

I once called him a good reasonable guy and he retaliated by saying he was in fact a pompus anally retentive knob jockey.

i also think williams was the best of the domestic light middles in the early 00's.

just a shame we never saw em get it on.

williams-roberts should have happened cos they were with the same promoters.

the others were with warren so no surprise on that one.

Hope he enjoys the rest of hes life outside the ropes. I thought he was the best of the bunch out of all the lightmiddles. Very classy.
