Jim Watt: "Yeah, just out of breath"

Normally being out of breath is a symptom of being tired!

Haha yeah i remember that and thought it was a little of an odd thing to say. Adam Smith is without doubt the worst commentor on any of the channels. It one big plus with Setanta not listening to him. I prefer Ian Darke everyday of the week.

I don't remember Smith commentating on any other sport. Whereas Darke does the football aswell.

Listening to Adam Smith is like trying to play golf with a penguin and then telling him he's not good at it, before angrily storming off to the nearby arcade.

Whenever I hear Adam Smith commentary I always want to say "VIACOM" out loud.

Among other things. One being, "shush Adam I can't hear the 4,000 fans and tanoy system over your Bonnie Tyler tones."

It's worse when you sit behind him for a fight. You try and write notes whilst Redd Pepper is shouting in your ear.

Ian Darke called the Burns fight just right on Friday. Smith would have over dramatised it into some fairy tale story.

It's his dreary whining voice that gets me and also the way he seems to make words last for ever. "Jaaaaaab" "Tszyuuuuu" "Lazcaaannoooooo"

As for over dramatising look no further than the HBO boys especially Larry Merchant.

I'd say Kellerman is far, far worse. Some might argue Lampley, but I like him.

Atlas can get a bit "mystical" at times too.

It was indeed - he was at Warwick Uni at roughly the same time as me (the year below me). They came across as an arrogant, obnoxious bunch collectively, though a couple of them were decent guys if you met them as individuals. I've got mixed feelings on Smith.. when he first popped up at Sky I couldn't believe my eyes as he'd been studying theatre studies or something similar at Warwick and had conveyed the impression that he'd regard boxers as 'working-class oiks'. Consequently I was convinced he was just using boxing as a 'stepping-stone' for a TV career. However, while I agree that he's not a great commentator, I've heard from enough people that he genuinely is passionate about the sport to acknowledge that my suspicions were probably misplaced. And as for university, well that was more than 15 years ago now and we all grow up and move on... I certainly still cringe at some of my own behaviour at that time (I was definitely guilty of inverted snobbery) so I'd like to think that he's the same...
Ultimately, the guy has stayed with boxing and appears passionate about the sport so given we share that we shouldn't be too hard on him

never understood the vitriol towards smith. I think he does a pretty good job. far better than rawling or "lol" Jim Neilly.

I miss Jim Neilly. Almost every time you watched BBC boxing there was a new howler to add to the list. Somebody should do a tribute website.
