Hoping to get some info from some of the wise heads on the forum who saw Joey fight.

How highly would you rate Archer? Would those who saw him rate him as a great fighter?

many thanks...

No, he was not a great fighter, but he was a top ten fighter in his era, very good boxer.

I had in high consideration the opinion of Kikibalt, an authorized connoisseur, but I thinks Joey Archer may be in the HOF

Remember, please, the triumphs of Archer over Tony Dupas, Don Fullmer, Jose Gonzalez, Mick Leahy, Denny Moyer, Blair Richardson, Victor Zalazar, Farid Salim, Rubin Carter, Holly Mims, and Dick Tiger...

Those last two wins came on hotly disputed decisions. Personally, I've seen the Mims fight, and it was a blatant robbery.

Archer essentially had two reputations: one was as a difficult high-risk-low-reward spoiler, the other as a gift-decision-getter. IMO there's truth to both assessments.

He was good, but not great. A huge fan favorite though, due to his Irish roots. Kind of like how John Duddy is today, with his popularity [make no mistake though, Archer would have knocked that bum out inside of five rounds].

I just saw him in two middleweight title bouts with Emile Griffith. The first one, in my
humble opinion was a boxing classic. Based on his two bouts with Griffith, I would rank him
has a great "uncrowned champion" and was capable of defeating any Middleweight of the Sixties.

Maybe part of the reason that Archer is overlooked or ignored was his defeating an old
Sugar Ray Robinson in Ray's last fight. :??
