Days after taunting Danny Green by saying he was looking forward to filling the void left by the WA champion's retirement, Anthony Mundine has instead left Perth fight fans without a show next month.
Less than a month before Mundine was due to fight unknown Uruguayan Rafael Sosa Pintos, the promotion at Challenge Stadium has been cancelled.
No reason was given on the Challenge Stadium website why the November 12 promotion would not go ahead in WA - but the shifting of Mundine's promotion to Sydney would suggest the viability of Green's arch rival staging his next fight in Green's backyard had backfired.
A statement from Mundine's BOXA International company said refunds for tickets - which ranged from $45 to $175 - purchased via Ticketmaster or on the internet would be refunded automatically to the credit card the tickets were originally purchased on.
Refunds for tickets purchased at a Ticketmaster Outlet must be made at the outlet of purchase, along with the presentation of the Ticketmaster tickets.
Refunds through Ticketmaster must be applied for by 5pm Friday 12th December 2008.
Earlier in the week, Mundine had defended his decision of venue and opponent, saying anyone, anywhere would want to watch him fight.
"It is great to see me fight, no matter who I fight," Mundine told radio 6PR.
"A lot of the press want me to fight King Kong every time I fight. To make these fights happen it takes months … maybe a year.
"With the big fights it takes a while, and I am not going to sit around and get stale. I want to get out there and fight."
"The guys that knock me, and they say I am fighting nobodies, they give me trouble at times. (Last opponent) Crazy Kim … knocked me on my arse. He was a good fighter and he could punch like a horse's kick.
"But I want to show the people the finesse, the charisma and the science of boxing. I want to put on a great performance and a great show for them."
The cancellation will also deny local boxing talent Willie Kickett a chance to increase his reputation in front of a home crowd
