Pavlik's corner

I dont want to go over the fight again but instead bring up what I thought was the worst corner team I have heard in a top level fight.

Before the fight, Jack Lowe said pavlik was not one dimensional and he not only had a plan A but a plan B, plan C and plan D and he hoped Hopkins thought it was all going to be about jab, jab, big right hand.

Pavlik couldnt get close to Bernard with his jab, jab, big right hand as b-hop moved back out of range, side-side and when Pavlik did move in, so did he to completely smother Pavliks long reach. So when you have been schooled like that for round after round, you would think you should maybe try something different!?

Instead after every round, all I heard Lowe say was: "use the double jab then throw the big right!". Where was the B, C or D plan?? Why not suggest working on the inside to the body to try and tire Hopkins for a KO attempt late on? Why not suggest trying to counter more and move backwards a bit himself, as Hopkins was coming forward when Pavlik backed off?

Then when he said to him in one of the final rounds, something along the lines off, "I know its a loss but you are still the champ" I could not believe it. Despite it being unlikely, when you have someone with Pavlik's power, he always has an outside KO chance. Why not tell him "You are well down on points but he looks tired, you need a KO here - throw everything you have - you can still beat him"?????

If Kelly got that one last bollocking then he may have got lucky with a big right.

I said the same over in the current scene:

I was watching the fight and all Jack seemed to say to Kelly was you've got to double jab, double jab. I think this went on and on up to round 8 or 9 when it should have been you need to push, you need to pressure, you need to knock him the eff down! I thik after round 9 his cut man was giving the most advice!

Kelly didn't look right to me on the night a bit like a rabbit in headlights. He had no movement, couldn't get his punches off, was getting tagged with some big shots, I question whether Kelly should have been allowed to remain in there until the bitter end, he was tired, B-Hop wasn't and it was painfully obvious that he wasn't going to KO B-Hop so why didn't they pull him out and save him from further beating?

Which Naz fight was it that all Steward said was round after round - you need a knockout to win?

Pavlik was closed to beign stopped himself. I guess his coach was reluctant to tell him to go for the KO, incase he ended up being stopped himself. It was hard for Pavlik to get a right hand on Hopkins anyway, and even if he did, Hopkins chin was too strong and it was too late in the bout to mean anything.

'First goto the body with the jab and right because your not landing it upstairs. Mix up jabs to the head and body. Close the gap and throw bodyshots followed by uppercuts and pull the trigger on any targer. Move to your right to set up the right when outside because hes moving left to avoid it' would have been my advice. Pavlik just wasn't pulling the trigger.

He would have lost anyway though

I re-watched the fight last night and that is all Pavlik's trainer would say during every round "double jab" - "give me the fcuking double jab" - "where's the fcuking double jab" - you've got to fcuking double jab" and on and on and on it went.

Dont know nothing about this Jack Loew but his cornerwork was piss poor IMO. Pavlik was in dire need of some sound advice in there yet all he kept hearing was....... well, you know what!

I agree totally^^^^

I watched Pavlik fight for the first time and he was pretty ordinary.

I thought the corner work was pathetic. Seemed like they didn't really have a clue and clearly Pavlik needed something more than "double the jab". Pavlik was clearly dejected in the corner as well and they seemed to have no idea how to fire him up or get him to assert himself in the fight. The same kind of thing happened in Pavlik Taylor II as well during the middle rounds, Pavlik seemed dejected and lost. It was not likley that Pavlik was gonna turn the fight, but I think he needed more support and advice from his corner.

I also hated the cut man going into the final round.. said somethin like: " It's ok, you've just lost this fight, you've still got your middleweight belts". That to me is pathetic, you should be saving that sort of talk for post fight, not when he's gotta go out for the 12th round. If your sending your fighter out with that attitude you should've just pulled him out the fight before the 12th and when you look at the way the 12th round went I think it supports my opinion. I'm not saying any of that would have made a difference to the outcome, but its not about that, its about how they went about things and conducted themselves, personally thought it was a disgrace.

I didn't know that, Unbelievable, I mean obviously you don't want your fighter to get Ricky Hatton'ed but they should have told him he needed the KO and to go for it

yeah,

I heard that and cringed. Very damaging for Pavlik with his fighting persona.

Its a shame to criticise a fellow for making a fight, but Hopkins was always ALL wrong for Pavlik even at 44.

Pavlik needed another stand-in front of me merchant nearer 160.
