I saw him fight 2 or three times flex and I thought he was a prett complete fighter although he did not seem to excell in any one catagory. He had (from the fights I saw) kind of a stand up european style with a very good jab and right cross. He probably would not be champion today but only because of Kostya Tszyu.

I never saw Costello fight, but "The Black Lights" is a great book.

the Arguello kayo surprised me because I didn't think Alexis had anything left, and I may have overrated Costello, as he seemed to have all the equipment to fight on a higher level for a while. But Tomato Can has him pegged; he was good in all the basic departments but just didn't have that extra to become more than the sum of his parts.
I read that book when it was new. Now this has me intrigued enough to go back and read it again.

I believe Tomatoe can has an accurate assesment of Costello.
The night he lost the title to lightning Lonnie Smith his lack of hand
quickness was expossed. He is however a New York, Jersy fighter, so
much like Jose Torres he is remembered while much better fighters of
that era are not.
