WILLIAMS V SOSNOWSKI TO HEADLINE NOVEMBER 8TH



Danny Williams will be joint top of an explosive bill that promises fireworks when he collides with Albert Sosnowski in an international heavyweight bout at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday, November 8th 2008.



Williams is part of the second show from Hennessy Sports that will be screened by ITV Sport following the knockout success last month of Jon Thaxton’s European Lightweight Title win.



Former world title challenger Williams (Brixton) faces Poland’s Albert Sosnowski over ten rounds following the withdrawal of John McDermott from a British heavyweight title fight that was scheduled to feature on the show.



Sosnowski has a formidable record of stopping 26 opponents in 45 fights with just two defeats and is a strong opponent for British heavyweight champion Williams.



Junior Witter (Bradford) will also have his first fight since losing the prestigious WBC World Light-Welterweight Title in May on the same bill against an opponent yet to be finalised.



Former British Light-Welterweight champion Lenny Daws (Carshalton), Colchester knockout artist Lee Purdy, title hopeful Gareth Couch (High Wycombe), Belfast boxer Kevin O'Hara as well as unbeaten duo Steve O’Meara (Wembley) and Dwayne Lewis (Canning Town) make up a cracking bill that promises fireworks.



The action will be screened live by ITV4.

Yep. I know it's a late notice replacement, but Sosnowski just got badly exposed by Zuri Lawrence. This fight with Williams is pretty darn horrible.

Also, why is Junior Witter coming back at this kind of level with no opponent yet to be announced? He just lost a WBC title on points, for Christ's sake! It's like Ricky Hatton boxing 6X3's at York Hall following his loss to Floyd Mayweather. Why do British boxers have to 'rebuild' to this extent after a defeat? Once you reach world-class level in the US you pretty much stay there.

What next? Witter-Kinuthia 2 for the Commonwealth title?

im suprised matchroom have put sosnowski in with williams because they have a big deal with polish tv and earn a lot of money to keep him winning it seems to me that barry hearn wants to end the contract (for some reason)and what better way than getting the fighter beat

I generally like Hennessy's shows but this one is very poor. Sosnowski isn't a terrible last minute replacement but we're 4 days away and we have one scheduled bout. No doubt the rest will be your typical bottom of the bill, prospect vs journeyman rubbish.

I'd be very disappointed if i bought a ticket for this when it was billed as Williams - McDermott and Witter's comeback.

yeah that's disappointing.

they should have given him a pointless warm up back in september.

not 6 months after his last fight.

they should have delivered him something meaningful to end the year on.

I am surprised Williams is risking the Botha fight for this.

Wouldn't surprise me if Williams lost. He shouldn't...but when the hell did that matter when it comes to Danny Williams?

He's been a loss waiting to happen for his last three or four fights. He SHOULD win, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightst if he didn't. Sosnowksi isn't any worse than McDermott.

They keep wiitter out for this long to fight a 6 x 3. any reason he couldnt have been on the Thaton bill. Maybe they should give Lucky Sambo a ring and see how he is fixed

Embarassing. Witter is meant to be one of his 'leading' lights.

For the second time in his career I am tipping Williams to lose on Saturday - and I am no Snowiski fan. Just think he's a little better than John Mcdermmott - which is all you need to be.

I havent seen any of Sosnowski so wont make any predictions but since the Audley loss Williams has been winning in very much the same way nearly every time (including his technical draw against Platov.) He comes out and takes a pounding early on but manages not to get stopped, then while the opponent is knackered Williams throws his shots and beats the guy, this happened with Platov, Airich, to a certain extent Gammer (who I dont think had Williams in trouble but got tired.)

I thought Williams looked very good vs Gammer - he controlled that fight.

Brixton veteran Danny Williams takes on Polish thumper Albert Sosnowski in a hastily rearranged headliner at York Hall on Saturday night, scheduled for 10 rounds. The 35-year-old Williams was originally scheduled to defend his British heavyweight crown on the top of the bill against Horndon's John McDermott, the Essex boy he edged out in the summer, but McDermott picked up a training injury and in comes Sosnowski, who lives in this country, at very late notice.
You know, Danny already has another fight lined up later this month in Egypt, of all places, in the shadow of the Pyramids, of all settings, against the hideous Frans Botha, of all opponents. He seems to be riding his luck an awful lot these days. He was hurt and nearly stopped by the much-improved McDermott in Dagenham in July and lost three points for various fouls but sucked it up and did enough to snatch the majority verdict. Before that, he survived three knockdowns at the hands of previously unbeaten Kazakhstani banger Konstantin Airich to win in the seventh round in Spain, much to the 'dismay' of Airich's promoter Ahmet Oner. He also outlasted his heir apparent, burly Welshman Scott Gammer, in nine rounds last year in Wales to win back the British title, a title he first won with a dislocated shoulder against Mark Potter in 2000.
When do the miracles evaporate?
Now, some would argue. Sosnowski lost his last one to erratic American Zuri Lawrence in June but is strong and effective and has threatened to deliver for some time. Lawrence nearly beat Hasim Rahman late last year (Rahman challenges Wladimir Klitschko in December) so one shouldn't judge Sosnowski too harshly. Maybe the loss, on points in the States, is the kick up the backside he needs. You certainly can't argue with his stats at 43-2 (26), although the 29-year-old rarely steps outside of his comfort zone and struggles when he does. The other man to beat him is Canadian "Big Bear" Arthur Cook back in 2001 in Hungary. Sosnowski was a mile ahead on points, ran out of steam and was stopped in the ninth round. He looks a bit muscle-bound.
By contrast, Danny comes in at whatever weight he chooses and uses his great experience - and heavy hands - to ride out the rough spots and come back. He looked finished when Audley Harrison, a man he had previously floored and outscored, butchered him in three rounds in London in December 2006 - but he hasn't lost since. He should be better-prepared than Sosnowski, given the pending Botha 12-rounder and how late Sosnowski took the fight, but 'prepared' and Danny rarely go hand in hand. If he is, the chirpy, likeable Londoner, who once flattened Mike Tyson, defies father time yet again and takes the points or even stops his man. It wouldn't surprise me, however, to see Sosnowski (or Botha) punch out a sloppy, foul-filled decision.
Bradford's Junior Witter also features on the card in a 10-rounder, his first fight since he was floored and outpointed by Tim "Desert Storm" Bradley for the WBC light-welterweight title in Nottingham in May. No opponent announced as yet, although Ricky Hatton is otherwise engaged with a flashy New Yorker.
