A constant source of amusement to me is pretending that there is a commision that would sanction this. Get real.

matchmaker: Peter Hallett

I have seen worse matchmaking. You should have seen some of the poor Japanese and Filipino boxers Channel Nine used to throw to Billy Moeller back in the Won Casey days! :shame:

Yeah I am not neccessarily talking about this match up, just chuckling about faceless men sitting around a table saying " yeah this is a good matchup". They don't exist in reality.
Match makers get the weakest opponent available and hope the local boy doesn't literally kill him. Cos that would draw the crabs.

The subject line is auto inserted to protect our (BoxRec) backside.
There had been instances where people had turned on us 'cos the card was nothing like it when they rolled up to the show.
Most of Australian promoters are reliable & do keep us updated, but that is not the case in other countries.
In time, under the ticket info you'll see any of the following:
1. New ..........
2. Unconfirmed :??
3. Confirmed .. :TU:
4. Postponed ..
5. Cancelled ... :x

Re Ammann vs. Talemaira
There is no provision in NSW legislation (for legal reasons) where NSW Boxing Authority can approve/disapprove match-ups.
All it can do at the moment is to impose restrictions on its own registered boxers e.g bout not to exceed 4x2 and naturally suspend them due to bad record and registration infringement.
Legislation & its rules & regulations is solely aimed at the promoter i.e. The promoter must....The promoter must.....The promoter must....
In the event of an incident it'll be his head on the chopping block and not NSW BA's & its board members.

Australian boxing had two TV commentating Ron Caseys in the 1970s:

- Channel 7 Melbourne's: Ron Casey (TV Ringside), and

- Channel 9 Sydney's: Ron Casey (aka Won Casey due to his lisp).

Both were good for boxing in their eras, but "Won" was far more outspoken and once had a bit of fisticuffs with Normie Rowe on a TV talk show. "Won" and Normie later reconciled.

Channel 7's Ron Casey ( not Won) used to commentate TV Ringside with a great old character called Merv Williams. Merv was like an olden day Michael Schivello( of kick boxing commentry fame) with really funny sayings like " This blokes had more misses than the presbyterian ladies college" and his favourite " he's like the boy with the barrow- he's got the job in front of him".

Merv was a former Australian middleweight champion. I think I mentioned once before when two "overweights" (i.e., heavyweights due to density only) were stepping around each other and Merv said "These boys would rather have a feed than a fight."

In another fight when one fighter hit the other below the belt and behind the scoring line Merv commented "he's hit him on the deaf-and-dumb."

The "deaf-and-dumb" being an old piece of rhyming slang for "bum"!

Merv had a wonderful turn of the vernacular, derived from a time in Australia when men were men and a pansy was a flower. Merv once described one fighter's powder puff punches as:

"that's punch is as useless as throwing cream-puffs as the townhall"!

On a slow fighter, "He could not run out of sight on a dark night."

On tough fighters, "We had a bloke in Queensland named 'Ironbark Jackson.' He used to let the other boxer hit him in the face until he broke his hands, then he would knock him out."

Merv Williams' personal album is digitalised and on record at the National Library of Australia. It can be viewed via his "Boxrec" entry.

My apologies for describing Merv as having Australian Middleweight Champion. He was Queensland champion but fought for the Australian Middleweight and Heavyweight titles.
