Why Hagler Could Take a Punch

(as detailed in ‘Sorcery at Caesars’)

Hagler’s lineage provided him magnificent boxing genes – that much was certain. He was graced with long arms and shoulders as wide as his ambition. More remarkable was his temporalis – a muscle that runs across the skull at both temples. Most temporalis are a quarter-inch thick, but both of Hagler’s were one inch, a phenomenon that astounded his physician when it was discovered during a routine exam in 1983. Hagler’s temporalis acted as a natural helmet and almost certainly helped him absorb blows. But he was sensitive to the notion of freakish physicality, perhaps from a racial perspective, and bridled at questions about his temporalis.

Put the word out. Any one with a larger than normal temporalis can become a future boxing great if they get into the sport. Talent, fast hands, determination, heart, good athleticism, who needs that? As long as you got the right size temporalis none of that matters. I'm sure the chinese are looking into it this instant.

The point, rather bald-faced, is to promote the book.

I understand that need, but the thread has no place on this forum, at the very least.

Hopefully they'll treat this blatant plug with the disdain it deserves.

George Kimball provides an interesting reason in Four Kings as to why Marvin could take a thump, his skull was thicker than normal.

Hagler was hardly an ATG. He was the MW king at a time when the MW ranks didn't have much going on.

Then his big shot, he tried to out box Leonard. hahaha

He was exposed for the medicore boxer he was.

Hagler was a good banger and always came ready to fight, but he really wasn't very skilled. :shame:

Whatever you think of him, he worked hard in the ring and the gym and gave
us some damned exciting fights.
