British Olympic boxer is being questioned by police on suspicion of dealing cocaine, it emerged today.

Bradley Saunders, 22, who was a medal hope at the Beijing Games, was held after a police sniffer dog found what was believed to be £12,000 of the drug in his back garden.

A warrant was executed at the British light-welterweight champion's semi-detached home in Cragside, Sedgefield, County Durham, at 1pm yesterday.

The boxer was taken away for questioning with his girlfriend Stephanie Elliott, also 22. The couple were held at Spennymoor Police Station and later released on police bail.

The dog alerted officers to a tin which contained more than 300g of white powder. It was sent away for analysis.

Saunders was tipped to bring back a gold medal from the summer games and was criticised after he said he was relieved to be going home to his young family after a shock defeat in his second fight.

Well he's innocent until proven guilty, so his career isn't over yet.

Most drugs swoops are intelligence based, they wouldn't turn up mob handed like that on the off chance. Probably jealousy that he is not really working and driving round in Mercedes etc

The burden of proof is important though, finding it in his garden is much different to finding it in his house, as many people would have access to his garden.
Say if I wanted to set him up it would be easy to plant stuff in his garden and make a call to the cops.
They will need more evidence than that, e.g sworn statements, his fingerprints on the gear, unexplained cash in his house, money he can't expain going through his accounts, explain how he can afford any luxury goods, holidays etc

Oh yes, good points - applogise I should have said "if he is guilty" then he is an idiot and deserves Jail time.

One SUSPECTS that the Police have had their eye on him for a while, cause an athlete should be one of the last people you'd suspect of such dealings, something must have triggered a response and lets hope he hasn't been set up..... if he hasn't, then he deserves to spend some time.

Sorry, I might be a bit prudish, but I think dealers are among the lowest of the low.

Planting £12,000 worth of cocaine is a lot, though. Would someone really sacrifice all that?
