i thought hed be on more than that??? , did he not ask for $2m to train oscar vs his son???

personally i thought he would be on 250k minimum

i know i saw that the other day....reports from america said he got $2.5m....i thought he would have gotten more aswell???

Yeah but both guys were regarded as champions. Malignaggi was holding the IBF belt recently, and never lost it in the ring. Hatton is regarded as the #1 light welter, The Man at 140, his lineage going back to beating the last major champ at the weight, Tszyu.

The most important title was at stake. The ring title. I think we might be getting to the stage where the value of that can't be underestimated. I'm sure that's part the reason Golden Boy bought it.

I know what you're trying to say, but as long as the ring maintain their rigid way of crowning a champion at a weight i.e. Contender 1 and 2 fighting if it's a vacant belt or contender 1/2 having to beat the champ to become champ (or something along those lines), then I don't see how Golden boy can harm its credibilty.

What I think we've seen them do quite subtly recently is raise the profile of the ring belts and start to lower the prestige of the other big sanctioning bodies slightly.

Whereas the ring rating used to be just a 'magazine's ratings' they're now gaining credibilty by being supported by the most powerful boxing promotional company in the world. I hope the trend continues, because I'd love to see it become a universally recognised way of crowning champions. Think it's just what the sport needs.

I sort of agree. However, it's still better than a WBO title. It does help us distinguish between the achievements of Haye/Hatton/Calzaghe, and say Nicky Cook/Alex Arthur/Scott Harrison. If those guys are getting recognition, respect and money in America, it is a positive thing.

But there are reservations about Ring titles. There are no mandatories. You don't get stripped if you won't fight Mr Dangerous #1 Contender. If Oscar promotes fights for Oscar (oops, Ring) titles, he's not likely to match his fighters with ppl from other promoters (see lightweight and Nate Campbell being isolated from the big names).

I think that's b0llocks to be fair.

As long as the citeria for crowning a champ stays the same i.e. rigid rules on how a champ can be crowned i.e. by the #1 contender beating the #2 or on rare occasions the #3 etc then Oscar or GB owning it makes no difference.

All it means is that it's becoming a bit more high profile - because they're promoting it as a major belt. And I think that's a good thing!

It all seems irrelevant when most of the "super" fights are now either at a catchweight or at a traditional weight somehere between the two fighters' natural weight classes!

Maybe Oscar can be Ring mag lightweight-light middle Interval-weight Champion? Ring mag, Greedy Bully champion? Ring mag, Oscarweight champion?
