40 boxers describe their greatest fight. 192 pages, with each boxer having their own chapter. The sort of book you can dip into for 10 or 15 minutes at a time during a long flight. A very enjoyable read.

Can't beat Hands Of Stone - Life and Legend of Roberto Duran too!

Something a bit different is 'In The Red Corner' by John Duncan.

Its about cuban boxing, part travel as he tries to get a meeting with Felix Savon to ask about a fight with Mike Tyson.
Its got alot of stories and meeting with various boxers and characters in Cuba and from its past.

Chris Jones - Falling Hard: Canadian journalist, great insight into the game, some great interviews and a really compelling story of a year in boxing.

Donald McRae - Dark Trade: a series of essays about various boxers and fights, plus McRae's own emotional journey in the sport. Well recommended.

Hugh McIlvaney - McIvanney on Boxing: the UK's finest boxing writer, though he rarely writes about boxing anymore. Fantastic book from over 30 years of fights. great stuff on Ali, Ray Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, Monzon, Lewis, Tyson... I learnt a lot from this book.

Jones' is the shortest and the easiest read - I'd go for McRae's though.

what a coincidence Ian its Cuba where we are going Playa Pesquero, also sounds a good read.

Four Kings is the best I've read.

ive picked up four kings a couple of times in Borders but always ended up buying something else, is it a good read then ?

Yeah, I'm about half way through it and the book does a good job of describing the fights and also what happened behind the scenes during that time. Definitely worth buying.

muhammad ali his life and times by thomas hauser suberb also easy to read accounts by everybody around the ali camp at the time

Unforgiveable Blackness about Jack Johnson is a good read but maybe a bit heavy for a 9 hour flight. I was in Cuba in 2002. Have a good one Mark

I'll second that, it's the definitive Ali account. It contains excerpts from various sources and outlets from the period which somehow makes it more authentic and balanced.

Donald Mcrae's Dark Trade: Lost in Boxing is a close second for me.

I have the Duran biog but haven't started it, recommendations on here reminded me to dig it out

I bought that Ali book and never read it; might give it a bash now you recommended it.

Of the new releases, I`d suggest Clay Moyle`s book Sam langford, Boxings Greatest uncrowned champion

or for an older title, Give him to the angels, the story of Harry Greb by James R.fair which is a great read, and also The roar of the crowd by James J.Corbett ... another fantastic read

The Black Lights by Thomas Hauser is brilliant and should fit nicely into a 9hr journey.

Be careful about Night Train by Nick Toches. It is not an easy read, and is written in a hard-boiled 'new journalism' style that is not everybody's jug of sangria.

I personally liked Ghosts of Manilla, although I'm not sure I could agree with Kram's hyposthesis.

Another book that I really, really enjoyed was Lords of the Ring: Marsh, Warren and the Business of Boxing. For some reason it's never mentioned, but it's one of the finest boxing books I've read.
