New Commonwealth light-heavyweight king Nathan Cleverly makes his first defence against Kenya's little-known Douglas Otieno in Widnes on December 12.
The talented Welshman won the title in October with a dazzling 12-round decision over Portsmouth's vastly more experienced Tony Oakey in Liverpool. It was a coming-of-age fight for 21-year-old Nathan, a former Joe Calzaghe sparmate who picked off tough Tony throughout to take his perfect record to 13-0 (3). In his first 12-rounder Cleverly made the transition from eight-round level - and quality sparring - look easy.
"Hopefully I can pick up a few defences of the Commonwealth title before going on to bigger things," says the confident, articulate, unmarked Cleverly.
Otieno, 18-1 (8), has never fought outside Kenya but won his last 15, including eight this year alone (some at four-round level), and it is hard to gauge his true worth. One thing is for sure, the competition must be pretty thin in Kenya: Otieno has beaten one opponent five times and another three times. There are no recogniseable names on his record.
None of this make him a poor fighter. Otieno is one of a fighting family and has the sport in his blood and his only loss came on points to Uganda's Charles Kakande in a six-rounder in January last year. As a Kenyan, we can expect Otieno to have plenty of pride and stamina. We can also expect him to be quite raw.
By contrast Cleverly went into the Oakey fight off three solid wins: a six-round knockout of Ghana's usually durable Ayittey Powers and eight-round decisions over muscled Ugandan Joey Vegas and gutsy American Antonio Baker, the latter on the Calzaghe-Bernard Hopkins Las Vegas bill in April. His improvement was obvious against the shorter Oakey. For a rangy fellow Nathan goes particularly well to the body.
Cleverly, who has his eyes on British light-heavyweight champion Dean Francis, really does look too much for the visitor.

One of the reasons the Lonsdale belt is so touted is because of it's regulation. The BBBoC regulate the commonwealth as well, so why can't they do the same job???

I'm looking forward to Nathan Cleverly Vs Danny McIntosh already :TU: It'll be a cracking fight in a year or so (to give them some time to build it up). Both boxers have got good careers in front of them imo

(I'm sue Hennessy and Sports Network will be on better terms in a year or so  )

Hi People , first time poster here, although i have been browsing for a while.

Love my boxing usually have a little flutter each weekend, win some but lose more :D

Been looking at the stats for this fight and although Cleverlys knockout % isnt the greatest but i fancy he'll stop the Kenyan within the first 3 rounds, 7/2 at Skybet.

As others have stated the fight is a complete farce. The African is only 5.7 tall and he's ranked as the 3rd best super middle in Kenya (out of 4, hhhmmm).

I agree with other posters that Cleverly v's McIntosh is a mouth watering prospect, i'd be lumping on the Mac after last weeks stunning perfomance.

I certainly wouldn't be backing a Cleverly KO at prices of 2/5 :o against a fighter you have never seen before.

SN don't care SKY pays for the bill, ticket sales don't matter.
Apparently Clev's opponent has accepted 250 quid's worth Primark gift vouchers for his purse, he's happy it's the most he has ever been paid!
