Probably meant it was strictly an exhibition of boxing. Many jurisdictions had bans on what were considered "prize fights", seeing them on the same level as dog-fights and bear-baiting.

So these were not actual boxing matches ?

Yet they go on these guys records as 'pro boxing' matches...

So how many actual pro fights did say James Corbett have ?

The contests were held with these stipulations to circumvent the law. However, in most cases the fights progressed as normal fights despite the pre fight claims made in order to make the matches. Most were indeed fights, and that's why you see many cases of "officials" stopping the fight once one combatant started to get hurt badly.
