Sky Sports News: Mayweather Jnr approaches Hatton

Sky Sports News just did a breaking news story that Mayweather's lawyers have approached Hatton about a possible rematch, trying to beat Pacquiao to the punch.

Mayweather is going about that all wrong I think. He beat Hatton comprehensively last time. Wouldn't the better course be to let him fight Pac, take a decent come back fight to get his sharpness back and then take on the winner in the winter? If Hatton wins, then there is more sense in a rematch. If Pac wins, then that makes that fight even more lucrative yet again... unless he wants no part of Pac. Why is he approaching Hatton and not Pacquiao?

Or is that his way of saying 'I don't fancy the Pacman fight?'

If this is true I will be amazed. I have said from the moment Pacquiao beat De La Hoya he would fight Mayweather next. I fully believe Pacquiao would be the come back fight Floyd would want I'd expect him to win it without to much bother as well. I'm a Hatton fan and I'd love to see him get a rematch with Floyd at some point but right now, Pacquaio Vs Hatton should be the fight to make. If Hatton got through that then maybe we could get excited about a rematch with Floyd. If Floyd wants to fight it should be against one of the big guys at 147. He's got the talent to clean up again at 147 and start to establish a tremendous legacy instead of persuing the big paydays. Another Hatton victory does nothing to improve his legacy, only his wallet.

They just interviewed Ray Hatton who said the story didn't break from their side, so it must have broken from the Mayweather side. He said they only got a phone call last night sounding them out if they would be open for a rematch if approached and they said they would, but are still looking at the Pac fight.

Personally I still believe Hatton is the fall back plan if things don't pan out in negotiations for Pacquiao Vs Mayweather. If the money is there for both parties I think they'll make a deal for Pac v Mayweather. I rekon Hatton is being used as a barganing chip/ threat by both sides atm.

Mayweather and Hatton both know that if they fought in the UK they would sell a shed load of tickets, but they would have to do it at some ungodly hour in order to please the yanks. Either way, they make a fortune out of it.

What I don`t like with it is that Hatton was not close enough in the first fight to warrant a rematch. Mayweather will just out class him again. It is yet another example of money over the best matches.

I would much prefer to see Mayweather v Pacman or Mayweather v Williams or Mayweather v Margarito or Mayweather v Cotto and the list goes on etc etc

Maybe there's just more money in a Hatton fight than a Paq fight?

The first fight was as comprehensive as it gets.

PBF-Manny is the fight the world wants to see

Any chance of Floyd coming down to 140 to make the Hatton rematch more interesting?

Mayweather is all about as his recent nickname suggests "money" just like DLH, Hatton, Calzaghe etc. he's a businessman who happens to box and actually happens to be quite good at it. Cast your minds back to the closing months of 2005 when Floyd was 140lb WBC champion and Junior Witter was the #1 ranked contender and he ends up fighting the shot to shit Sharmba Mitchell in a non-title bout at 147lbs, not because Mitchell was a better fighter than Witter but simply because Mitchell brought more to the table and was a name well known to US boxing fans.

At the end of 2006 he becomes the linear champion at 147lbs having just beaten Carlos Baldomir, but rather than defend against one of the contenders in the ultra-hot welterweight division in 2007 he goes up to 154 to take on an old, inactive Oscar De La Hoya in a novelty fight which earned him an absolute fortune, then he returns to 147 following a brief flirt with retirement to fight Ricky Hatton knowing damn well that Rickys popularity in Britain and the USA would be another big PPV event even though Ricky was never really a threat to him.

Then everyone is expecting a top welterweight fight in 2008 against Cotto, Williams, maybe even Margarito? Nope, Floyd being Floyd decides to take on the daunting threat of "Big Show" in a scripted WWE event and following that he decides to have a rematch against Oscar but decides against it and retires.

Where money is to be made "money" won't be far away.

:D

The fights I'd like Mayweather to take are Margarito at welterweight and/or the winner of a fight between Hatton and Pac man at 140.

The only way Hatton makes a rematch competitive is if Mayweather has done a Roy Jones and gotten old over night and the fight is at 140.

Hatton could get home advantage, 140, and a ref that won't be as strict this time around though as he is in a better negotiating position than in the last fight.

How about they do a big tournament? Hatton fights Pac and Mayweather fights the winnner of Margarito/Mosley, then the winner of those fights fight each other? Just imagine the kind of money that would generate. A genuine P4P tournament to determine the number 1 of this era. Fantasy stuff I know... but there is a HUGE amount of money in it.

That would be a good idea but unfortunately like you said....fantasy stuff :(

Mayweather moved up not to fight mitchell as a warm up to fight Judah, who at the time was Undisputed Welterweight Champion. A prize that Mayweather has never held.

It had little to do about risk v reward against Witter, it was a tune up against a fast (ish) southpaw, who admittedly had name value in the states.

So Sky Sports News are covering this as a 'breaking news' story - just a rumoured, completely unconfirmed Ricky Hatton fight?

Thats strange, 18 months ago they failed to even mention an actual Ricky Hatton fight in Las Vegas against an actual marquee name back when Ricky was unbeaten.

I wonder why.

Perhaps Floyd may be thinking that if Hatton gets to Pacquiao first and pulls off the...(would it be an upset now?) victory, not only does he lose out on gargantuan payday but also the chance to reassert himself as p4p no1 without facing some of the more dangerous names at 147.

Im no Hatton fan, but I must have seen the fight differently to quite a few people on here. To me, they both seemed crap for most part of the fight. It was messy and any fluency was hindered by the appaling ref. As said, Im no Hatton fan and am not saying that Cortez stopped Hatton from winning, just that Hatton's best chances were scuppered and he increasingly lost his composure, which is exactly what happened with the KO.

For the most part of the fight, there wasnt much between them, then of course, Mayweather stepped up a gear and started hitting the target with those counters.

Im no saying Hatton would beat Mayweather, but it is certainly not the impossible task that some seem to make out. Mayweather was simply not that good in that match and Hatton was even poorer.

Just my opinion.

Guys, the source of this story is Ray "Vegas is cheaper for the fans" Hatton.

Something will no doubt become clear in the New Year.

My thoughts too.

It is all part of the posturing and chess game that goes on during fight negotiations.

No one wants Pac man to think he holds all the cards and is the only worthwhile option out there (when in reality he is THE MAN to fight right now at 10st/10st 7)

What do you expect of a "News" company owned by cronies like Rupert Murdoch. Their presenters don't have a clue either. I still remember when George Galloway completley owned and humiliated the close-minded presenter on Sky News live. :TU:

If the Mayweather v Hatton rematch DOES go ahead, it will probably be for the money. Let's face it, Hatton is hardly short of naive "fans" who'd pay to watch. If there was no money, Hatton would never take the rematc

Mayweather will never fight Margarito, no way. Too damned big.
