He said on ricky speaks that he was fighting on the 21st. Any1 know what happened?

He was at the Dalzell Park Hotel, Motherwell, Scotland, topping the bill on a Christmas black tie show on a 6 x 3's against Calne's Chris Long. Went the distance with Gomez taking it 59 - 56 on the refs card. Boxing News was there so there should be a report in the next issue.

Former Scottish amateur champ Eddie Doyle made a successful pro debut winning every round of a 6 x 2’s against Matt Seawright of Tamworth.

The ultra confident Yassine El Maachi, London based from Rabat, Morocco went to 7(2) – 4 against Jamie Ambler, El Maachi giving away 6 lb and about 6 inches in height. El Maachi was straight out of the blocks in this scheduled 8 x 2’s and Ambler could only cover up for almost the entire first under a barrage of jabs and wicked sounding hooks to the body. Ambler came back in the second and the two went toe to toe for at least half of the round with the room howling their appreciation. Round three was a repeat of the first and the end came at 1:07 when the ref deemed that Ambler was in no position to continue. El Maachi (the Showman) is one to watch out for, he is the only fighter to have beaten Kevin Concepcion, a round 2 KO last month, the story goes that he bet Frank Maloney his purse that he would KO Franks man and Frank took the bet!

Fight of the night was Dean Hickman, West Bromwich and Stevie Williams, Liverpool. Williams goes to 6 – 0 with the ref stopping it right on the bell at the end of round 2. Both boxers wanted it and went toe to toe straight from the bell. It was Williams body shots that did the damage in round 2; I lost count of the number that found their target although some of the diners ringside thought that more than one had strayed a bit low. Former WBU Light Welterweight World Champ, Shay Neary was in Williams’ corner.

Its a little sad to see Gomez headlining in 6 rounders. I know he had bills to pay, and needs to keep busy - just still though a little sad.

I think he deserves a few easy 1s 2 b fair. Obv trying to hit the big 50 fights. I think hes hoping for a crack at Ricky Burns commonwealth belt.

Reckon he should go for the irish belt and call it a day. Hes not gona b competitive with the likes of Alex Arthur or Kevin Mitchell any more.

There were a few results from Sunday- Yousef al Hamedi and Kristan Laight (spelling? -hardish names to spell) picked up wins- I always think it is good to see journeymen boxers getting wins.

As for Gomez, I like the guy- an exciting fighter to watch, but checking the record of the guy he beat- Chris Long, this bout would seem well below Gomez's level. As others have said, Gomez is a decent guy and deserves the pay day, but still, he could be fighting a class of opponent closer to his own ability- would make for a much better bout!

The shame is, he's really starting to show the effects of a tough ring career. He really slurs his words these days and has a largely vacant look in his eyes. Great character though.

I think at this stage Gomez vs Barrett for Barrett's English Super-featherweight title would be a good fight.

You'll probably see him in with Mitchell next.

Off topic, i always wince when i read the words 'WBU' and 'World Champion' in the same breath.

Shay, god bless him, has never been the World champ at 140lb in any shape or form.

Yeah, fair point- and I agree.

However, I remember him having a great fight V andy Holligan for that belt, live on ITV I think (or maybe just highlights) . I doubt the bout would have gotten any TV coverage if it hadn't had a "world title" tagged to it.

it was a ding dong im a good friend of steve williams and he turns up to fight everytime he is exciting and i cant wait for him to get a bit of tv coverage to show the uk what he can do

Gomez is great to watch and a real warrior and its for that reason that I fear for him really as he has shipped a heck of a lot of punishment in his career and in his recent fights is really just taking shots flush now, Brian Hugues advised him to retire even before the Arthur fight... wouldnt like to see him put in with Mitchell now, a few more fights like he had with Khan and Johansson and youd really have to worry about his health...

Mike is a fighter, thats what he does, he doesn't have options in reality tv like Audley(even tho I wish he did), the fella has gotta earn a living, he's got a wife and kids

Would be nice to see him go into training fighters like his contemporary Anthony Farnell has but I don't know if he has the temperament/personality for it.

He would probably end up fighting unlicensed if the board took his license off him

People have to realise that most fighters don't have a lot of choices in life, which is prob why they end up boxing in the first place!
It would be criminal to take one of those few choices away, esp as the other choices are normally far worse. Mike is being sensibly managed and is doing well, keeping busy, picking up little wins and getting rewarded with some bigger fights

I understand the point being made, but does that mean that Gomez is gonna get smashed in the head at little shows around the north-west for the next 20 years to prevent him getting into trouble outside the ring?

I just find it a bit of a sad situation. Gomez' life isnt finished simply because his boxing career is over. With his relative fame there must be a host of decent (legitimate and safe) money making opportunities for him to put his energies into (e.g. ensuring that his film gets made and is well publicised).

I agree with you, his choices are to get battered for the next few years in the ring or get into trouble on the streets.


Or behave.......I'd rather see him retire and lead a happy life...but it won't happen.

Is his boxing career over? He still seems able enough to be fighting at English, possibly British level.

James Murrays father had the anti boxing brigade on his back wanting him to slag boxing off after his sons tragic death.
He said he was proud of his son fighting for the Lonsdale belt, and would much prefer him passing in these honourable circumstances than dying in an alley with a needle in his arm.
As I said many fighters don't have a much choices in front of them and fighting for a living, with the obvious risks associated, is certainly the lesser evil
