It's the centennial of the Tommy Burns v Jack Johnson bout in Sydney Australia. I found this article an interesting read on the event.

A monumental day in Oz boxing history and indeed in world boxing history. Why not also post it in the BOTP forum

I saw Johnny Famechon beat Bobby Valdez at the Old Tin Shed.

A pox on the memory of Robin Askin for pulling it down. :shame:

Sweet Science/Koori Radio hosted a Jack Johnson centenary ceremony at 11.07 am on the original site in Rushcutters bay on Boxing Day.

Alan Moore, president of the ANBF flew down from Brisbane to be the Keynote speaker and of the small but enthusiastic crowd it was amazing how many people in attendance had a Jack Johnson/Hugh Mcintosh/Sydney Stadium story to tell.

Peter Fenton's poem below pretty well sums up the demise of the "Old Barn":

A history of the Stadium is the history of the
The Hoi Polloi and the money folk would meet.
The barristers would walk with those who dealt in petty crime
In the brightly lit and noisy, crowded street.

It really disappointed me that they let the Old Barn fall
The men who called that tune should shrink in shame,
It should have been refurbished and left to show us all
From where and when our early champions came.

There's a great radio documentary that the BBC broadcast on Boxing Day called 'The Galveston Giant'. It's about Jack Johnson and covers the Burns v Johnson amongst other highlights of Johnson's career.

Have a listen at http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/fiv ... -2200a.mp3 or download at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/5lxmas08/.
