Not wanting to comment on the case but this could have implications for all the Braveheart fighters - will they all have to find new promoters now?

Anyone else immediately think of Scott Harrison when it mentioned a 30 year old being arrested?
Remembered Scott is 31 and the guy is named in one of the other reports.

So is Hughes a gangster? Surely he didn't earn his millions from boxing?

That is the first thing I thought, have done for a while actually.

The one article in particular, indicated some serious underworld tones.

Runs doors around Scotland according to those articles and we all know that when you control a clubs door, you can also POTENTIALLY control the flow of substances in and out, in theory at least.. :oo

To be fair mate my post was complete speculation based on what I have read in newspaper articles so should be taken with a pinch of salt.

He is certainly painted as a 'well connected' connected man with interests in the security business in Scotland and he is undoubtedly wealthy. I suppose until he is convicted of anything he should just be known as a wealthy businessman who carries a knife in night clubs.

Make of that what you will...

Boxing Tycoon on Murder Bid Charge

This is the sensational headline on the front page of Scotlands Daily Record. I even saw it on the GMTV table this morning although I don't know if they spoke about it.

My point here is not to debate the case, but to ask why the press has to dump on boxing at any opportunity.

According to the newspapers Barry Hughes is a very wealthy businessman, a millionaire whose businesses include property, security and sports management with clients including footballers, apparently he is a director of 15 companies.

The boxing link is that he is a boxer 17(10) - 3 - 1, a manager and a promoter. As a promoter he has staged four promotions including his first in September 2007, so he's hardly made his millions from boxing.

Surely the headline would have been more accurate as "Property Tycoon" or "Security Tycoon".....Bloody Newspapers!

You are so right :box:
A business magnate, sometimes referred to as a mogul, tycoon, baron, or industrialist, is a person who has reached a prominent place in a particular industry (or set of industries) and whose wealth has been derived primarily therefrom

He definitely made money from property investments. He's a bit of a "man about town" and knows the right people.

He was Harrison's manager briefly. Chucked him when all the trouble kicked off

Well innocent until proven guilty, and if the charge doesn't get reduced its hard to get a patsy

Because a lot more people will read the story when it's headlined "boxing tycoon"... simple.
