Alexeev was stopped in the ninth by Ramirez.

Anyone have any info on Ramirez? What is his listed height, was he close to Alexeevs height or no?

I saw a picture - the guy is short and stocky with HUGE HANDS!

Alexeev great offensively but must be fragile.

Only one fight did I see weakness in him, on Eurosport when some guy gave him a bad nosebleed.

Ah well, Enzo Mac, you have a free pass to the WBO title.

In the first huge shocker of 2009, highly touted cruiserweight hope Alexander Alekseev was stopped by unknown Argentinian Victor Emilio Ramirez after nine hard-fought rounds for the WBO interim cruiserweight title in front of 4000 excited fans on Saturday at the Burg-Wächter-Castello in Dusseldorf, Germany. Alekseev started well, keeping the distance and outboxing Ramirez in the first couple rounds. The Argentinian, however, managed to get some hard shots in at times while marching forward with bulldog-like aggression. The tide turned in the sixth when Alekseev got caught by some big body shots and was wobbled. The Russian came back in the seventh with a body shot himself that stunned Ramirez. Afterwards, it was the Argentinian who bullrushed Alekseev around the ring and connected with hard shots in the eight before wobbling the Spotlight fighter around the ring in the ninth, scoring with huge shots that had Alekseev out of his feet. The Russian was not able to get the momentum back and was almost down at the end of the round, eating punches in bunches. After the ninth, the corner of the Russian decided it was enough and threw in the towel, making it a tenth round TKO victory for the underog Victor Emilio “El Tyson del Abasto” Ramirez. Suffering his first career loss, Alekseev falls to 16-1. Scoring the big upset, Ramirez moves to 14-1 with 12 KOs, capturing the WBO interim belt.

Whilst Alexeev dropped off somewhat with his retirement loss, Gennady Golovkin took a step forward in his yet-to-catch-fire pro career by blitzing the experienced Javier Alberto Mamani inside the first round.

I hope Golovkin can convert his amateur pedigree into pro sucess - perhaps this will be the start of his run towards high profile, card topping fights?

Gutted. I thought Alexeev was the real deal, but he got done like Hernandez against Braithwaite.

Lot of cruiser prospects getting beaten. Aaron Williams got stopped by a South American. Then Hernandez and Alexeev in Germany, both stopped. Godfrey got outworked by a fat, slow Rudolf Kraj, and so on.

Eric Fields as well. It's quite shocking how many there are who fall early.

I hope Golovkin can fight for the EBU title this year.

Really like the look of Golovkin, genuinelly interested in seeing how far he'll go.

Cant say the same for Alexeev, I remember watching some youtube vids of the guy when he was being touted as a prospect and he looked very open to me. It's hard to be overly harsh on him though, haven't seen enough of this Ramirez cat.

No, Alexeev is 6'2 and Ramirez is clearly shorter.
