Everyone has almost the same picks./....

After a long, but entertaining night from the great Arena, the results are
in.
Stage one results...
Jerry Quarry vs Tommy Farr.

It was clear early on that Farr's jab was going to cause trouble for Quarry
who struggled to establish a counter game or a good rythm. Quarry has
his moments, landing some flush crosses the few times he corners Farr.
The Welshman manages to stay mobile and keeps his stick active for most
the night.

UD 12 Farr

Larry Donald vs Buster Mathis, sr.

Both fighters work at a distance, Mathis looking for his left hook lead, while
Donald tries to jab and dance. For the early stages of the fight neither man
ventures to mix it up. Donald slows and is less active as the fight reaches
the lare rounds. Mathis is in suprisingly good shape, on his toes and throwing
combinations up to the final bell.

MD 12 Mathis, sr.

Francesco Damiani vs Frank Bruno.

Damiani does his best to box safely, avoiding the power of the big Briton, but it
is Bruno's jab that sets up telling crosses and stiff uppercuts. It seems Bruno is
close to finishing Damiani in the 3rd round, but the Italian is able to stay afloat.
The middle rounds are spent with Bruno letting Damiani of the hook, following him
around landing shots at will. In the ninth Bruno erupts landing a right cross to the
neck that puts Damiani out for the count.

KO 9 Bruno.

Michael Dokes Vs Ernie Terrell.

Dokes tries to match his speed against Terrel's reach, as he finds it suprisingly easy
to get inside, where he works the body well. Terrell is able to hold and uppercut often
which frustrates Dokes. Both men clinch alot, with Dokes spurting on the break.
The later rounds has both men digging the toes into the canvas trying to out hustle the
other. Neither man is in danger of falling, even though good shots land from both sides.

SD 12 Dokes.

Leon Spinks Vs James Tillis.

The jerky movements from Spinks make for an awkward oncoming target for Tillis, who
struggles at first to land clean shots. Spinks is able to smother and hook Tillis for most
of the first few rounds, jabbing and crashing his way inside. Tillis, pushing Spinks of often
lands one or two shots every time the distance allows. In teh later rounds Spinks slows up
and struggles to match the pace now set by Quick Tillis.

UD 12 Tillis.

Zora Folley vs Joe Mesi.

Coming out fast early Mesi does his best to over whelm Folley who after the first two rounds
starts to thump right hands home from the inside. Mesi is able to get off quicker but finds
Folley at times an elusive target, as Zora manages to just lean out of the way of most shots.
From the 8th round onwards Folley is more active with hard right hand leads, as well as good
combinations in close. Mesi attempts to box his way to a points win, sticking and moving.

SD 12 Folley.

John Ruiz Vs Renaldo Snipes.

Both fighters play it safe early, and trade long range shots. Any time Snipes attempts to mix
it up, Ruiz finds saftey in the clinch. Snipes does his best to burst right hands into Ruiz but
is blanketed by Ruiz's jab and grab game plan which nullify most of Snipes efforts. a slow fight
with little action.

MD 12 Ruiz.

Jersey Joe Walcott Vs Jimmy Thunder.

Jimmy Thunder storms across the ring after the opening bell looking for a qucik win. Walcott is
able to whether most of the shots, and survives the early storm. The next few rounds see's
Walcott patiently pick his shots as Thunder does his best to land heavy blows from the outside.
The later rounds see's a plodding Thunder get picked apart by a slipping and sliding clevr boxing
Walcott who is able to do what he wishes for the last four rounds.

UD 12 Walcott.

Fight of the stage....Dokes SD 12 Terrell.

Buster Mathis, sr Vs Tommy Farr

Early on the deceiving speed and defence of Mathis is apparent as
he is able to throw and move well often frustrating Farr, who finds
it hard to find the range to land solid shots on Mathis.

Farr jabs well to the body, but does little more as Mathis lands left
hooks and uppercuts that break the tempo Farr is looking to establish.

By the end of the 12 rounds, it is clear that Mathis has done enough.

Mathis UD 12.

Frank Bruno Vs Michael Dokes

The big Briton trades early with the faster Dokes who struggles to get
inside past the long jab and left hook of Bruno. Thudding left leads from
Bruno keep Dokes at bay for most of the rounds. A hard right cross slams
down into Dokes at the end of the fourth that wobbles Dokes.

Well ahead by the start of round 5, Bruno for most of the round keeps
Dokes away with his jab. In the middle stage of the round Dokes is
able to land a fast over hand right that sends Bruno down. Bruno does his
best to hold on, but another combination of fast hooks with a right uppercut
send the Briton down, who is up at seven. With time left in the round Dokes
smothers Bruno with punches to send him down again, this time Bruno is up
on wobbly legs at 11.

Dokes KO 5.

Zora Folley vs Jersey Joe Walcott

As soon as the opening bell rings both fighters show respect for one another by
exchanging probing jabs. The first few rounds are some what even with Walcott
landing the right hook every time the men are inside, and Folley finding a home
for his right hand while in close on Jersey Joe's jaw.

In the sixth and seventh rounds Walcott begins to take control throwing combinations
that suppress any offence from the clever Folley. Zora now picking his shots carefully
shows more respect for Walcott's power. At the end of the seventh Walcott lands
a crisp right hand counter that backs Foley up.

In the 8th round Walcott gets a good start with a flurry of hooks that go high and
low. Folley still countering well with his right hand is floored mid punch. Though
back on his feet quickly he is stunned. After another barrage of straight shots and
sneaky hooks Folley is thrown onto the ropes. The ref steps in, as Folley takes
to many un answered blows.

Walcott TKo 8.

John Ruiz Vs James Tillis

Both men come out moving well and mixing it up with the jab and long range
right hands. Tillis is the more mobile man, whil Ruiz seems to have the power to
cause worry for Tillis. After a mobile intial rounds, the fight slows up with both
men clinching and holding one another high. Seldom throwing combinations each
man throwing jabs or singular power shots. It is clear in the later rounds that
the quick movements from Tillis on the breaks is frustrating to Ruiz who shows
slowness as he does his best to rough Tillis up on the inside. In the last four
rounds, Tillis does well to dominate Ruiz who spends most of his efforts jabbing
and grabbing his way in, to avoid the swifter shots of Tillis.

Tillis UD12.

Dokes has gotten extremely over-rated in this thread. Knocking out Bruno in 5?? Huh??? :o

He was trailing on points. And got lucky....Bruno was in full control
until a Dokes burst.

I personally rate Bruno above Dokes...but upsets happen..

Buster Mathis, sr Vs Michael Dokes

From the opening bell Dokes spends most of the rounds following
a mobile Mathis around. Both men engage in some swift melee's in
the rings centre but Mathis manages to dominate in the clinch which
disrupts Dokes combinations and rythm.

Fast hand work from both men is followed by solid lunging shots as
Dokes does his best to land that big heavy shot into Mathis skull.

From the ninth round onwards Dokes slows up his work rate, his body
attacks and fast combinations have drained him, as he spends the
later parts of the rounds fighting in bursts.

Mathis has also slowed and while cornering Dokes in the 12th he is
unable to capitalise.

A close and well paced fight. The judges award it to Mathis...just.

Jersey Joe Walcott Vs James Tillis

Both men are cautious for the first few rounds, Tillis is on his
toes using movement and range to frustrate a Walcott who
is looking to land counters to the body and on the inside.

In the fourth and fifth rounds Tillis is flat footed now, and is
becoming more and more of a target to short range left hooks
and crisp right hands from Walcott.

A rapid flurry of punches wobbles Walcott, as Tillis steals the eighth
round which was looking to go Walcott's way.

The fight slows up in the later rounds with both men digging the toes
in to the canvas mixing it up. A good fast paced finish with Walcott
looking the stronger man in the end.

Walcott UD 12.

Folley has fought them all I just think if you put Mesi in at his best with Folley at his there might just be a few bombs landed early and my guess is Folley would get caught with one or two from the amp'd up adversary. He got stopped by the bear but not only survived but beat Foster. That was the hardest result to commit to of the way I see this tourney shaping up other than Tillis upsetting Spinks. I have never seen Farr fight before but have read up on him I just can't pull the trigger to give him a win over Quarry.

As much as I would love to have Quarry meet Walcott or Mesi in the finals I just don't see it when I go unbias mode with the group in front of me.

As much as I sometimes can't stand the antics of Donald I do think he was underrated and I don't know what happened in his life but his fights later on in his career weren't the same as the life he had in the beginning on the way up beating williams and a slew of others before Bowe.

Another choice I made was Ruiz over Mesi I don't see Mesi doing well with him at all. Ruiz has a great chin despite that Tua blowout where he got caught by a murderous hook off guard.

Donald and Ruiz in the finals I could think of maybe 101 different combos I would rather see than that from the group listed below but these are the two I went with. :)
