i've always wondered who has won a world title with almost no pro experience (or even amateur)

i know there was a guy in thailand or the phillipines who won a belt in his 3rd fight or so in the lighter weights, but have there been any big names recently that have won a title very early?

Britian's own Paul Weir won a WBO(gus) title with something like only 5 pro fights under his belt. That said, at very low weights there isn't that many fighters out there!

Of the current crop berto springs to mind. Its like he is still a contender and has the wbc belt

Pete rademacher gave it a shot against Floyd patterson in his first pro fight but came up short Kod in the sixth

Bradley is another of the les experienced champs, would like to see him in a big fight this year.

Gavin Rees was a bit of a shocker

I think it was Veeraphil Sahaphrom of Thailand who got a WBC in his third fight. And as Terry said, Paul Weir got a WBO in his fifth or sixth. Won two or three world titles all told, and his career was over inside of 20 fights.

saensak muangsurin won the wbc light-welter title in his third fight, veeraphol was a late bloomer - he won a world title in his fourth fight

especially when places like Japan (not racist to suggest they tend to be lighter is it?) don't let the IBF get a look in, never mind the WBO

Lowersmiths, thanks for the correction. You're right, Veeraphol certainly had a padded record on his way up.

As an aside, it's remarkable how the average height and weight of Japanese people has increased after WW2, due to the influence of Western Diet.

This fella came on the scene quickly.

Remember watching the Magri fight as a lad on the telly with my Dad and grandfather - i was the nipper, but we all thought he was special - i guess all those kick boxing bouts caught up with him and stopped him being the highest echelon, but my God he was quick.

Berto won the WBC 17 in his 21 fight and had an extensive amateur background though as you say they have been very deliberate in the step up they have made. Collazo last time out showed he is pretty much ready for anyone. I'm not saying he'd win but he can compete.

True but its just like he came out of nowhere. IMO Berto is still a diamond in the rough

wasnt tehre that japanese guy at flyweight who won ad lost his title in his first 10 or 12 fights cant rember his name atm will look it up after

Dave McAuley fought for the IBF title in his 14th fight, which is quite quick, in fact out of 23 fights 9 were for major world title bouts.
