At least the enviroment is there for someone to come through as most of the divisions on a domestic level are of a decent standard.

Joe Calzaghe has the firepower of a WWII battleship in his left pinky if you listen to some of the people on here, can anyone else be so unique?

I think not.

Well I certainly hope that Britain produces another like him. But I also hope that the said A. N. Other doesn't take the same career path as him by winning a world title and defending 2/3/4 times a year against opposition that 2 or 3 decades ago would only be considered as keeping busy non title defences. The very best world title holders (Calzaghe in my book was one) should be fighting each other. If these fighters are in the same division - great. If not, step up and meet a deeper challenge or entice another dominant force out of the lower division.

Money and politics, unfortunately, did not allow this in Calzaghe's case and the integrity of the sport suffered. Hopefully we have a new era with Haye leading the way.

I think our top fighters will just go straight for the biggest fight, these days. The "lesser top fighters" will defend WBO belts, the better ones will gun for the key fights. After the successes of Calzaghe and Hatton in America, British fighters surely are taken more seriously and potentially more marketable.

2 years as King beats 20 as Prince.

Lewis was undisputed for a much shorter time than Joe's "10" years at the top(for the most part there were many who argued his position as number 1 in the SM ranks)yet his legacy far outweighs Joe's.

Joe's "reign" at the top was so long because he didn't take out the other claimants years before.
It wasn't because he faced every challenger and other champion and couldn't find an equal.
Joe could probably have retired 6 years ago had he sought to unify and then take on the big names right from the start of his reign as "champ"(like Haye has for example)

Still, a marvellous talent who deserves to hang them up and live the easy life from here on in.

Calzaghe already held the WBO strap at a younger age than what Sutherland is now and he is just starting out!

Not to imply Calzaghe is dumb, but as Yiddo said - it sounds like todays fighters will go for the Titles and Big fights asap.

I know I would rather be King for 5 years and retire undefeated and great than be a Prince for 10-15 years.

David Haye - Sutherland ( from whay I have read and heard) seem to be the type that want the challenge and not the Fwank Warren milk it for all its worth and NEVER even lose a round and then get beaten once you step up route ( See Naz - also Hatton to a lesser extent)route.

I thoink JC could have beaten everyoine in hos weight class with his chin - power - workrate. I would sat a peak RJJ would beat him but it would be a real fight. JC is a hell of a tough man.


I doubt we will see his type again - apart from Lennox ....had we before?

One thing I will give Joe - he lived the life for years... it is a special person to have that kind of discipline.

I think no, simply because of the fact that I think fighters/promoters will now cave into the temptation of having going for the Super fight with a prime p4p er... and end up losing (as Ricky has done, and as Joe would have done IMO).

Perfectly managed career.

Fighters are no longer scared to lose...

Im not a Froch fan but if he beats Taylor and then Kessler he has achieved as much as Joe IMO

He is what he is... a tough come forward scrapper.

Yes, and I know "ever" is a long time - but it takes someone, well, beyond special to reign for 12 years and hasn't "minced" about.

There has been no fighter in history to do it.... although I am sure there would have been lots had they taken the Calzaghe route.

I think Roy would have toyed with Calzaghe to be honest. Look at how Joe struggled with a largely negative but mobile and crafty Hopkins. Joe has always had problems with movers and counterpunchers, he has never liked having to chase opponents.

As good as Joe is, I don't think he is on the same level as Roy Jones, who at 168 was about as untouchable as I've ever seen a fighter look - he was also a massive puncher at the weight. It would have been a totally one sided fight.

God I hope so, afterall he was/is our best

Froch vs. Calzaghe for the British people and the 'worth' it used to, SHOULD represent!!!
