BARRERA/KHAN - Is It Possible?

Is it possible that the BBBOC turn down Barrera due to his metal plate in his head, I realise it has been there for about 20 fights now but just wondered if he can pass (or even take the obligatory MRI scan) with that little gadget in his bonce.
The fact he has got his licence in the states etc is one thing but its a lot easier to get and keep there than here, just surprised its not been mentioned before by anyone on here.
Assume that the promoters have been in touch with the board and probably no problems but unless they have been asked, perhaps we are all just assuming he will get approved.

Always possible that something like this could happen.

I'd forgotten bout that, there is no way he could pass a MRI scan with that, but then pro boxing is all about money and i'm sure it could be sidestepped if wanted

Yeah he bailed them out after they went bankrupt after the Watson case.
I'm sure he can call in some favours, rumour is he is capable of getting substandard Africans in a position to fight for the Commonwealth belt!!

Supoose it is possible. Didn't Hennessy lose an opponent for Eastman at the last minute a few years back because he had a bullet in him which meant he couldn't have an MRI scan - which was the only one that the Board accepts

I mentioned the plate on the other thread but you would THINK that sort of an obstacle would be overcome before promotion/ ticket sales etc....surely???

Im sure the BBBOC sold there London premises to pay for the Watson case, and moved into a 2yr lease in the Old Library Cardiff, free of charge courtesy of Lord brookes
Not so sure Mr Warren bailed them out?

Warren set up a fund to help pay for compulsory annual MRI scans

There was a fuss about it the last time he was in the country and I think something come up about this when he fought Naz - got through the medicals.

Don't think he had the plate when he fought Lloyd, although he might I guess, Naz medical was formality as it was in Vegas so no sweat for him there.
Just think it will be interesting, the more I think about it the more I wonder how they are going to pass him, its almost a case of double standards if they do I reckon

Wayne failed the MRI due to a shadow on the brain (same as Andy Bell, whio has Irish cards ok). wayne had a further MRI a few years later and the shadow had decreased insize or disapeared this time so a license was re-issued.
The board only accept MRI scans, (not the MRA some other boards take) but if he can't have a scan due to the plate then in theory the board should not allow the fight. I'm not sure is a metal plate that was medical inserted would prevent an MRI from taking place. The bullet one might have been a different story, possibly medical grade medal is differnt than standard British steel

and then MRI'ible.

FROM WIKI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRI_scan
Ferromagnetic foreign bodies (e.g. shell fragments), or metallic implants (e.g. surgical prostheses, aneurysm clips) are also potential risks, and safety aspects need to be considered on an individual basis. Interaction of the magnetic and radio frequency fields with such objects can lead to: trauma due to movement of the object in the magnetic field, thermal injury from radio-frequency induction heating of the object, or failure of an implanted device. These issues are especially problematic when dealing with the eye. Most MRI centers require an orbital x-ray to be performed on anyone suspected of having metal fragments in their eyes, something not uncommon in metalworking.
Because of its non-ferromagnetic nature and poor electrical conductivity, titanium and its alloys are useful for long term implants and surgical instruments intended for use in image-guided surgery. In particular, not only is titanium safe from movement from the magnetic field, but artifacts around the implant are less frequent and less severe than with more ferromagnetic materials e.g. stainless steel. Artifacts from metal frequently appear as regions of empty space around the implant - frequently called 'black-hole artifact' e.g. a 3mm titanium alloy coronary stent may appear as a 5mm diameter region of empty space on MRI, whereas around a stainless steel stent, the artifact may extend for 10-20 mm or more.

Warren Bailed them out by paying £100k to them ( by paying sanctioning or some ind of fees or something lie that up front) they also moved to Cardiff to save money.

I am positive there was some scandal about this a few years back - naturally nothing came of it.

It didn't help Barrera's preperation for the first Manny fight. I am sure this is when it got revealed, by his ex coach. Between that and the fire at Big Bear - it is no wonder Barrera fought so badly.

Yes, it was not publicly known at the time of the Naz or Lloyd fights. Which means he either wasn't scanned for Lloyd, or passed. I belirve the incident (a motorbike crash, I think) happened when he was about 15 or so.

Barrera does not have a metal plate in his head, it is a myth. If he did he could not even have an MRI scan which he has had.

FROM FOGHT NEWS 2003.
Golden Boy Promotions, promoter for Marco Antonio Barrera, as well as his attorney, Stephen Espinoza have released a joint statement exclusively to FightNews.com regarding the controversy over a 1997 non-boxing related brain surgery procedure underwent by the featherweight champion. The surgery was to correct a congenital defect and required the subsequent insertion of a protective implant, or plate, in his head. Potentially the disclosure could jeopardize Barrera’s scheduled November 15 showdown vs. Manny Pacquiao, as well as his entire boxing career. Now that this information has come to light, the question is whether he can be medically cleared to fight again, although the gritty Aztec warrior has seemingly suffered no ill effects. Barrera has had sixteen fights, including both classic wars with rival Erik Morales and his thrashing of Naseem Hamed, since the surgical procedure.
The statement in its entirety:
In 1997, Marco Antonio Barrera had surgery to remove a very small group of malformed blood vessels in his head. The surgery was successfully performed in Mexico City by Dr. Ignacio Madrazo, a top neurosurgeon who also previously treated Muhammad Ali. As part of the procedure, a few small, protective implants were inserted at the point of surgery. The implants provide no competitive advantage or disadvantage.
Marco was cleared by his doctors to continue his boxing career shortly after the surgery. Marco has had numerous MRI's and other neural examinations in the six years since the surgery. Not one examination has revealed any damage, injury or abnormality. Marco has consulted with neurosurgeons in both Mexico and the United States, including specialists from the UCLA and USC medical centers. A June 2003 medical report reflects what Marco has been told since shortly after the surgery: "t is clear that Mr. Barrera's neurosurgical condition does not imply any risk for his professional boxing activity at all. He is able to perform any kind of training and/or boxing without any different risk of what the profession produces in any other human being." In addition to a clean bill of health provided by his doctors, Marco has fought 16 bouts since the surgery with no ill effects.
Marco's former promoter and manager were fully aware of the procedure. They were each provided with copies of Marco's medical records with the understanding that they would disclose the information to the appropriate parties, including the relevant boxing commissions. When Marco very recently learned that the information had not been timely disclosed, he immediately acted to remedy the situation.
Marco loves boxing, but as a husband and a father, he would not continue to box if the surgery had created any additional risk of injury to him from boxing.

Plate or implants, he has something in his head for sure, or so it would appear from the statement above from his ex promoters.
Still clearly SN have done there homework so no worries for them on that score then
