Bomber Graham's son shot in feud

THE teenage son of South Yorkshire boxing legend Herol "Bomber" Graham has been gunned down in a Sheffield pub car park.
Oliver Graham, aged 19, was shot in the head outside The Double Top pub in Halfway Centre, Halfway.

He survived the attack, but was yesterday in the Northern General Hospital awaiting surgery to remove pellets lodged in his head.

Today his champion boxer father said he believed the attack could have "stupid gangland" links and blamed youths for taking their disagreements "that one step further".

But he stressed he did not believe his son was involved in such a lifestyle.

"It's the gang warfare, that's how it seems," he told The Star.

"There might be some retaliation in it, but I don't know what's going off. To my knowledge Oliver isn't involved in anything like that.

"This has really shook me up."

The former British, Commonwealth and European champion said the pain he was going through since the shooting was "worse than having a fight".

He said: "I am hurt, I am definitely hurt. I'm feeling horrible - it's worse than having a fight. It's like losing a fight."

Herol, a veteran of 48 boxing matches, said he believed his son survived the attack only because he was shot at long-range.

He said: "Luckily he's going to be okay - they've done it from a distance and the pellets have entered his head but not his brain.

"But it is serious and they've got to operate on him."

Police say they believe the attack in the early evening of Monday was "targeted" and not carried out randomly.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Police are keeping an open mind about the motive but currently believe it to be a targeted attack and are following lines of inquiry to trace the offender.

"Police are treating this incident very seriously and inquiries are ongoing."

Sheffield boxing trainer Brendan Ingle, who worked with Herol in his heyday, said there was a worrying trend for "pay back" attacks among youngsters - something he works hard to eradicate among the youths who attend his gym.

He said: "We tell them down at the club that if someone says something offensive, just smile.

"It's got to the point where a dirty look or a name calling leads to somebody getting stabbed or shot at.

"I imagine Herol is feeling very upset about what's happened. No matter who the parents are, it's always upsetting for them because you don't know where it starts, or where it finishes."

Last month Brendan told The Star: "People are getting stabbed and shot and for what cause? People need to put down weapons and focus on breaking down barriers."

There just is not detterant whatsoever to make these fcuking idiots think twice about stabbing or shotting someone!

Get the guns, knives of the street, FFS! :box:

10 year MANDATORY for carrying a gun.

5 year MANDATORY for carrying a knife.

That will teach the little fekkers to think twice before they do stupid things.

Instead of locking people up for carrying guns, they should let everyone with a licence be able to legally carry a gun.

Thats a typical american way of thinking and its not just rednecks .The right wing media in America seem to hold a belief that if everyone has a gun then that evens the score. Its almost child like ideology.

Number of people shot dead in USA in 2007: 8290 out of what, 280 million? (source, official FBI website)

Number of people shot dead in the UK in 2007: 42 out of 56 million (source: UK statistics office)

Are you so paranoid that you genuinely advocate guns for everyone? Along the lines of the nutters that said that the Columbine killers would've been stopped if the other kids were tooled? D'you not see that though you might "feel" safer (which is false: statistically, of course, the very presence of a firearm makes you that much more likely to be injured by one) others will be put at more risk?

If we all had guns, then it would mean any silly arguement could end up in a killing.
more so than it does now

Letting anybody have a gun would be a stupid idea, only law enforcement and military should have access to firearms outside of a gun club. People say it would end up like the US if we all had access to guns but I reckon percentage-wise gun crime would be far worse here than in the US.

Ditto Datsue my thoughts go out to Herol Graham and his son. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.

Personally I don't think it's a very good idea to let everyone have a gun. That would only mean even more who shouldn't posses them would have means to get hold of one. What does get to me though is that if a guy breaks into your house and you crack him over the head with a baseball bat/cricket bat you've pretty much had it and most likely you'll do time. But that's another topic for perhaps another forum!

Get well soon Oliver. :TU:

1) I dont have a problem with the American ideology per say ,but there way of thinking is far different than the rest of the world.
2)I dont disagree that it evens up the score but this way of thinking is dangerous , thats what i said
3)The adult way of thinking is not to give everyone a gun. Reformation of gun laws, Making guns harder to get.

I heard things like this being said on the fox news show "the o rielly factor" and heard him saying that everyone should get a gun and no one on the show stopped him saying this.
These comments came in the wake of the virginia tech massacare

If you look at states like Texas where the right to carry guns is strongest, they have a worse gun problem than anywhere, also school massacres etc show that it just doesn't work.
While it can be argued well enough in principle, in practice it just makes the country far more violent and dangerous

Are Americans allowed to carry guns with them in public? I am quite sure that in a lot of areas it is not permitted.

The number of shootings would likely go up, but I would imagine that crime in general would go down.

That's a ridiculous idea.

Where on earth do you find the space to put all these people in and keep them locked up for life.

Also, if someone does something stupid at 16 - they get no right to parole? That's bloody stupid. You can't just lock up everyone and throw away the key.

The single biggest cause of all of this is the materialistic and fractured society we live in. You have to treat the causes, as well as the effects. It's no good sticking plasters over cuts when someone is bleeding to death, you need to give a blood transfusion, that's the situation we have now.

If someone grows up on a rough housing estate where everyone else is carrying weapons, and they are afraid for their life, the liklihood is that they too will carry weapons. It's poverty that ultimately caused all these problems, or more specifically, the differences in wealth we have in our major cities.

Instead of an amnesty, how about 'cash for guns' amnesty from the police, tey need to get guns off the street. Follow that up by more stop and searches, more metal detectors, life imprisonment for gun smuglers/dealers and stiff sentences for carrying a weapon (which would have to be after the amnesty).

New prisons need building and ridicously low sentences need bumping up

Also give the young lads some positive things to be part of, something with team building/social skill building, something with some achievement. Many are disilisusioned by society or simply have bugger all to do with themselves.

Really? The statistics suggest otherwise.
