Did you ever see the HBO production "Joe and Max"? I thought it was pretty decent, and gave a good account of their relationship. I think a movie solely based on Schmelling would be interesting.

I hadn't heard about this. Thanks for posting about it. I hope it's a good movie, with good actors. A good movie about Max Schmeling would be fun to watch!

I did see Joe and Max, that was a pretty good flick.
I am assuming this is going to be a German flick?

- Be nice if a German, or even French/Brit, or any Euro director with some vision made a Max/German centric movie, not the usual glossy schlop that pass for big budget movies. The biggest problem with a Max movie is the legend of Louis overshadows his own story and the thing everybody likes to regurgitate ad nauseum.
Max served as a paratrooper in WW2 and was captured and POWed. We know the climate he was forced to risk his life serving Der Fuhrer. He'd already risked his life and everything he had fought for in life when he hid those two Jewish boys in his hotel room in the middle of the Holocaust and got them ferried off to safety. Doubtless there are dozens of untold stories of his class and humanity, and precious little on his jovial nature either.
Precious few movies show from the German moral perspective of having to walk a line during one of the most evil eras in world history.

Agreed Broughton.
I would like to watch a flick on Max that showed more than his
Joe Louis bouts....maybe his pre Louis fights and life and then
his almost novel like lifestyle through the war and into the era
of two germanies and beyond.
I think as long as American dollars are involved they will go down
the same safe path and most likely end the film with the 1938 Louis
fight.

Yes. I found this online:
Howard Winstone film to be made in Merthyr Tydfil
A Lord of the Rings star will be coming to Merthyr Tydfil this
summer to join the cast of a feature film about the great Welsh featherweight boxer Howard Winstone, entitled Risen.
Australian born actor John Noble agreed to take the part of legendary and iconic boxing trainer Eddie Thomas after a number of meetings and phone conversations with producers Stuart Brennan and Neil Jones.
Howard Winstone, was born in Merthyr and died there in 2000 aged 61. His renowned trainer Eddie Thomas claimed that children born in the tough valleys town were so angry that they came out with their fists clenched.
It was under Thomas, himself a boxer of some repute, that Winstone learnt his trade.
Thomas moulded the young Winstone in his Penydarren gym, teaching him the fast left jab that would become his trademark punch. Winstone won 83 of his 86 amateur fights, the highlight being the gold medal he claimed at the Empire Games in Cardiff in 1958.
He turned professional in 1960 and two years later claimed the British featherweight title from the highly rated Terry Spinks. The reception Winstone received back in Merthyr brought the town to a standstill.
John Noble said he was very excited about the role, and has already been sent a number of books and articles for help with his research, including the latest book by local professional boxing referee Wynford Jones.
John came to fame, after a long and illustrious stage and TV career in 2004 with the release of the final instalment of Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King, where he portrayed the king of Minas Tirith, Denethor, for which he won a Screen Actors Guild Award.
The film Risen has been gaining momentum ever since the premiere of the short film The Fifteenth at the Bessemer Hotel a few weeks ago. The short film is now available for all to watch on a commemorative DVD about Winstone, available to buy online at
http://www.howardwinstone.com.
On the website is also the latest news and gossip regarding the feature film, and also contact details about how to get involved. T he producers are continuing to look for local people to invest and businesses to support the film, which will begin filming on August 1st and be out in the cinemas later next year.
The producer and also the actor who is taking the role of Howard Winstone,Stuart Brennan said he was over the moon about signing up John for the role of Eddie.
'John is such a terrific actor, everybody remembers him from Lord of the Rings, and his incredible performance, he's the right height and build to play Eddie, and we think he will really turn the role into a memorable performance.'
The director of the short film, who will also be taking the helm of the feature, Neil Jones, said: 'We've been speaking to a number of well known actors for various parts, and John is the first of what will hopefully be a long line of recognisable names that we will be bringing to Merthyr to really put the story and town on the map globally and cinematically.
'We're really hoping that people get behind the DVD that's come out and show interest in both the film and documentaries on it, so they get a taste of what's to come.'
Most of the filming will be done in and around Merthyr and the producers are hoping to announce some more famous names in coming weeks.

This would be an interesting film indeed. You'd think a movie about him from the Germans would highlight the fact that Max was by all accounts, one hell of a decent human unfortunately born into the wrong era (what with the nazis using him for their propaganda etc)

I wouldnt get my hopes up. Uwe Boll is considered by many to be among the worst directors in the history of cinema. He is that bad. His movies are awful.

What do you reckon to that new Harry Greb book? I know you were also writing one. Are you planning to continue with the project or does this turn of events mean a change of plan?

Doesnt change my plans in the least. The other book is rushed and has enough holes and mistakes that my book is still rolling ahead.

I'd hope the film focuses on his life after boxing as well. To me, its films like that, that are the real money makers and tell a better story. That's where people went wrong, imo, on the Marciano movie, they spent too much time focusing on the Louis connection. A proper Marciano film would be his crazed obsession with cash, his escepades with women, and his growing paranoia to end up a nobody. If it shown glimpses into his come back hopes with Johansson, and the Ali staged fight, that would be a picture.
As far as Schmeling goes, a film dealing with his life following his second bout with Louis and onward, would be an interesting story, and would give better insight to a man who was falsely associated with the Nazis during the height of WW2. His "comeback" in Europe would have been interesting as well.

No doubt it will end with the Louis rematch, why do boxing flicks build up
to one thing that writers or mass fans get excited about...
Ali - ends in Zaire...
that Phantom Punch obsesses in title etc over the '65 Ali fight.
Schmelling's life was exciting, it was literally a movie. The man did things
after boxing that were legendary let alone what he did as a prize fighter.
I hope the show his war time exploits as a para, his business life thereafter
heck even him getting the crew of Australia II in shape for the America's
cup !

- Did you gents not catch the release in that other website? Henry Maske plays Max, and King Arthur his last opponent. Man, facially Arthur looks like he's 50 yrs old in that photo, but Maske is in great shape and youth spirits:

Undefeated IBF middleweight champion King Arthur Abraham and Ulli Wegner made a brief trip to Zagreb this week where the shooting for the Max Schmeling movie has begun. With Henry Maske impersonating one of the biggest German sporting heroes of all time, Abraham will play Richard Vogt, Schmeling´s last opponent. Just as in real life, Ulli Wegner will be in his corner. “It is a great honour and pleasure for both of us to be a part of this movie,” King Arthur said. “Working at the set is almost as hard as a training session. But it was a lot of fun.” The movie will hit cinemas in 2010. Abraham (29-0, 23 KOs) took only a quick time-out from the preparation for his June 27 defence against Mahir Oral, which will be staged in Berlin´s Max-Schmeling-Halle. “This was a nice break from the hard training routine,” Ulli Wegner said. “We really enjoyed it. But now our full attention is back on the next fight. Arthur is in great shape and he will delight his fans on June 27.”
