Khan or Cleverly - who will go furthest?

Born 3 months apart, Khan in Dec '86, Cleverly in Feb '87.

Which of these 2 young British prospects will have the most successful career?

I will say Khan, who do others think??

Khan easily, Cleverley does not have the punch to go beyond european class.

Okay teddy - I haven't seen a lot of Cleverly tbh, but at the end of the day he is British and Commonwealth champ.

I think Khan still holds the C'wealth belt he won vs. Limond. (For my money he would take the Lonsdale belt off Murray too). But he hasn't yet of course. Then there's the question over the chin of Khan. I'd still have to say Khan for now though.
Maybe it would be a better comparison when Cleverly kicks on a bit instead of beating up "mystery Africans".

Cleverly isn't British champ, Francis is.

Apologies for that glaring error - I thought he won it off Tony Oakey - I better get my facts right next time. See this is why I don't start threads

Its a no brainer, Khan.

To answer your question, I think Cleverly is the better all-round fighter (Khan lacks a chin), but Khan will go further with match-ups like the Barrera one (I feel Khan will stop the slow, old, fat, naturally smaller Mexican). Cynical match-making.

Khan, with the Barerra fight being a final eliminator for the WBO title, will probably already have gone further than Cleverly can expect :(

I agree, Cleverly is the allround better prospect of the two though. And he is yet to really grow physically into the lt-heavy division.

if cleverley was matched with RJJ next who do you think would win ??

RJJ is semi shot if not shot, Barrera is just past his best defo not shot

people are called barrera/khan 50/50

i bet my house on cleverely losing to RJJ

based on my analogy above - Khan will go further

Khan is massive compared to Barrera, Cleverley is a similar size to RJJ and if a top class fighter like Calzaghe can't knock RJJ out then a novice with little power is going to do no better IMO. RJJ may be past it at world level but he's still good enough to give any up and comer nightmares.

Nathan Cleverly will go further.

He seems to be getting stronger, and he's the more durable fighter. Both have very good technical skills.

A word of advice to British boxing fans: don't put your faith in Amir Khan, or you will be badly disappointed.

I'll have to go with Khan.

Might well be a different story 18 months down the line though.

Khan v Brook would have been a better thread

Brook is looking to have the lot

I agree.

That Ingle style does worry me a bit sometimes though.

Piper had Clev's talent and Khan's chin

Say Cleverly was matched with Glen Johnson now - would be be a slow old fat fighter like you seem to think Barrera is?

Johnson is, of course, much older than Barrera, he has also moved up from middleweight (where he first boxed for a world title) to super-middle to light-heavy - a rise of 13lb, compared to the 13lb rise Barrera has done from super-bantam to light.

Of course, you would say the Johnson match is an incredible one, like the Khan-Barrera one is. To the original question, Khan is a much better fighter than Cleverly.

didn't Piper once go 12 with Nigel Benn?
No Chin?? :o

Piper was naturally a lot bigger then Benn, and used his reach advantage well, but when Nigel caught up with him in the 11th the Welshman was felled like a tree.
He also was beating Barber out of sight untill he was taken out with one punch

I'll take your word there. I've got Benn's book somewhere which lists his career at the back. I thought Piper had gone the distance cos I remember being surprised that that porky speccy MENSA bloke off the couch had gone the distance with the Dark Destroyer lol.

Johnson is older and naturally the same size as Cleverly, if not bigger. Your point doesn't make sense.

would fancy khan to go further at the minute. although where would khan go if he loses to a maybe fading barrera. what options would khan have then , a rematch with prescott or go back to the british scene. a defeat to one of the other british lightweights would send khan back alot. we also know that khan's chin is very suspect and this could limit how far he will go.

we need to see cleverly up against better opposition to judge him. tony oakey said he only had 3 weeks notice for the fight. how different would that fight have been if oakey had proper preperation. maybe cleverly would still win but it would be a bigger test.before cleverly's last few fights he had a poor knockout ratio , now hes getting knockouts. is that down to cleverly developing or him fighting nobodies. he needs better tests so we can find out.

Cleverly looks like a strong, fit kid. He is kept busy and he's getting the names at the right time (Oakey), perhaps Francis if that can be made. He does need fine tuning, needs to shorten his shots a bit (something he is doing with the body shots). Nathan doesn't look like a guy who will get blown out, get dropped every other fight. Let's keep an eye on him, see what happens. There is promise.

Khan of course will get more in the way of opportunities cos he's an Olympic medallist whose face seems to fit, for the media, and whose name is known to casuals.

barrie jones shook him, not a good sign that.

But RJJ was always MILES better than Barrera.

RJJ lasted the distance with Calzaghe so it is not fair to comapre a MAB to a RJJ.

Cleverly V Edison Miranda at Lt heavy would be good!

Remember that MAB is not a lightweight.
