Jennings couldn't - WHO has kept a banger at bay, and won??

I have been having a look at the Michael Jennings debate on the other thread.
The general consensus is that Michael got a great payday and a night to remember at the Garden. Whether you think he got out the fight at the right moment, or could have done more IS NOT WHAT I WANT THIS THREAD TO TURN INTO. Go to the other one if you want to talk about that. Most people seem to agree that he had no real chance whatever he would have done.
So the question I am asking is: I want your examples of when a fighter has won against a banger. Personal experience, maybe you were in attendance, or maybe it was a big fight on tele. I can think of plenty of examples where somebody HAS tried to do it, but come unstuck - say for example Herol Graham against Julian Jackson, Jennings Cotto etc..
Give us examples of when an underdog fighter has successfully evaded and beaten a big hitter.
For me Calzaghe Lacy comes to mind, although that's not the best example as Joe wasn't really on the back foot.

I dunno I think its usw the other way round. The thing is, at the highest level of the sport most of the boxers are either punchers or carry somewhat of a dig. Its rare to find a light-hitter at the top of the sport. Even Calzaghe, who gets stick for slapping, punched pretty hard earlier in his career before the hand injuries came about. That can affect a fighter mentally and prevent him from throwing the left-hand with full power.
I was going to say Paul Williams vs Antonio Margarito. I won big on that fight

It has been said above, but
the one which sprung to mind immediately, and in my mind the very best example of keeping a banger at bay for 12 rounds... was the masterclass which was Lewis vs Tua. Boring fight, wouldn't watch it again - but Lewis was simply brilliant that night and nullified everything Tua had.

Salvador Sanchez KO8 Wilfredo Gomez.
The boxer not only beat the puncher, he ended up knocking him halfway through the ropes. Gomez had knocked out thirty-odd straight & made ten defences of his world title, but Chava decked him in the first & pasted him. Wilfredo looked like a bloody gargoyle at the end.
Salvador Sanchez TKO 13 Danny Lopez & Sanchez TKO 14 Lopez:
Huge hitter nullified by defence, movement, workrate & punching accuracy. One was a mercy stoppage & the other one (I think) was cuts, but I can't remember which one was which. Again, Lopez looked like he'd had an argument with a threshing machine by the end of it.
Oh, & one more: Ricardo Lopez W12 Rosendo Alvarez.
Mexican outboxes slugger who outweighed him by about half a stone in a strawweight unification fight (Alvarez couldn't make the weight, so Lopez took him on anyway). Lopez is cut about five times over & under his eyes, but looks like an all-time great with movement, combinations, ring generalship.

i knew there would be some Mayweather in there, i was trying to think of the harder hitters he'd faced I could only think of Gatti Baldomir and Hatton. Think Baldomir could dig a bit. Totally outskilled Hatton, great performance that.
Good call Chambers on Munroe and Kiko likewise the other fight u mentioned.
I didn't see Lewis Tua so I might take a look on youtube. Naz Barrera good call.

There's bound to be a bit of Wayne Mcculloch in there too, although he didn't beat Naz. I never really saw that many Mcculloch fights. Great boxer by all accounts.

If you can't trade with your opponent you need to land more accurately and make him miss, Cotto was landing the cleaner shots than Jennings and looked half as strong as his opponent.

Ali didn't keep Foreman at bay - he won by outlasting Foreman and absorbing hellacious punishment, that's not a particularly good example.
As said earlier, Lewis Tua is a textbook example of how to do this.

Ali did it to Shavers with a mixture of smarts, sassyness and the open scoring system.
Tunney boxed rings around Dempsey.
There are a good few. Pat Barret told me pre-fight that they had worked on keeping Cotto wrong-footed, Cotto was just too strong for that.
Cotto is also very good at cutting the ring off, notice how little he moves, but his opponent always seems to be in reach. He also wastes no time in letting his hands go as soon as his opponent is in front of him.
I absolutely love watching cotto fight, he's like a machine in there, so few wasted shots, so little excess movement.

Ivan Calderson and Ian Napa in most of their fights.
Just pick out the ones they were underdogs and won if that's what you're looking for.

I used to think that but now disagree after watching it again, he tucked up made Foreman miss allot and kept timing the better more accurate shots. Its a myth that Foreman simply punched himself out, he didn't pace himself very well but he got schooled by a sharper puncher and battered from dropping his hands while going toe-toe against the former HW champ
