No. It's a woman called Miranda Carter.

On March 20 in Bethnal Green, York Hall is the scene of the British debut of much-vaunted Colombian puncher Edison "Pantera" Miranda in a 10-rounder against London-based Ugandan Joey Vegas. East London boxing fans, certainly those who fancy a spot of despatch (death) riding, are spoilt for choice. Ian Napa defends his European bantamweight crown in Newham on the same night. Miranda is the one-time street kid who ate lizards to survive and later, of course, broke the jaw of Armenian strongman Arthur Abraham in the fourth round of a graphic challenge for the IBF middleweight title in Germany in 2006. Now it was "King" Arthur's turn to survive, his lower jaw hanging and leaking blood, and he stuck it out for the full 12, moving, smothering, blatantly clutching and even throwing a few punches, aided and abetted by American referee Randy Neumann, a former male model who deducted five points from Miranda for various innocuous-looking infringements when he should have waved it off (well, either him or Abraham's corner). The German-based Abraham picked up the decision (surprise, surprise) to hold on to his title and an unbeaten record - but at what cost?
Our own Kevin Finnegan was never really the same after fighting on to the points with a broken jaw against Germany's Franke Reiche in the 1970s, but Abraham got away with it. On his return in 2007 the champion thumped Canada's previously unbeaten Sebastien Demers in three rounds in Germany and showed he was fully recovered last year in Florida in a much-publicised rematch with Miranda, whom Abraham completely and utterly destroyed in four rounds. Miranda, based in Florida at the time, suddenly found himself a wild man stuck in No Man's Land, hence this decision to try his luck in more civilised Blighty (anywhere but Germany). Only one other man has beaten Miranda, by the way: American middleweight star Kelly "Ghost" Pavlik in seven ferocious rounds in Memphis in 2007. Make no mistake, Miranda can fight. He can punch.
The man won his frst 21 fights by knockout (18 in the first round), crushed Philadelphia's useful Willie Gibbs, also in the first, snapped the unbeaten run of Allan "Sweetness" Green on a 10-round decision (a big, big win), belted out durable Henry Porras in five (Porras had been eight with heavy-handed Carl Froch), took out Contender David Banks in three, broke the jaw of Abraham, of course, and is still the only man to have halted Britain's iron-jawed Howard Eastman (in seven in Florida a few years ago, when Eastman really was Eastman).
At 31-3 (27) Miranda's knockout rate speaks for itself. Six of his last seven wins have been by knockout - four inside three rounds - and he turned only 28 last month so we can expect even more big-hitting from the hungry import with the American schooling (he fought 11 times in the States, nine of them wins), although Miranda can be rather too keen to drop the big bombs at times and boxes here at light-heavyweight. Many, many punchers lose their punch as they move up through the divisions. They also find it harder to shake off any big counters.
Vegas thus represents an excellent first test of Miranda's British hopes and of his light-heavyweight strength and power. The impressively muscled Vegas comes off a fantastic eight-round draw with WBO-ranked light-heavyweight Dean Francis in Swindon last month and gave the talented, unbeaten Nathan Cleverly all the trouble he could handle in Cardiff in 2007, before he dropped an eight-round decision. Welshman Cleverly is now the Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion.
At 11-4-1 (4) Tottenham man Vegas won his first 10 but has evolved into your solid opponent type, strong, aggressive and determined but lacking a tad in finesse (that makes two of them). Vegas, 27, will most definitely test the fierce Colombian but has been stopped once or twice in his recent past and the most likely result here is a middle-round stoppage for the new kid on the block.
