Qualities You Begrudgingly Admired...

...in fighters you never cared for?

I'll get the ball rolling with Felix Trinidad. Never liked him, never will --- but I admire his heart & sheer will to win. I'd never question it. Of course, I could go on & on about why I don't like him, but let's try to keep criticisms to a minimum. Just the (few) positives we can muster about our disliked fighters!

Rocky marciano..this fighter is highly overrated..but i had to admire his courage, determination and devotion to conditioning...

Two guys I always wanted to see KO'd. Roberto Duran and James Toney. Both could really slip, block and roll with punches.

Joe Calzaghe's skill. Can't deny it, even though I'd love to.

When he was active i hated Pernell Whitaker's guts, always could not wait for his next fight just to see him lose.
I always had hidden respect for his skills though, just i was too immmature to admit it (machismo is a complex beast to an adolescent).
Before this becomes a post about the chemistry of the teenage body (earning a me a telling off from GI, no doubt!) i have to admit, i will not hear a word against Pernell nowadays. I think it's my way of making up for all that misplaced hatred.

Ugh...Hector Camacho, I have to concede, was a great, great Lightweight who is under-estimated today. Magical speed. I still hate him, though :DD

The speed, combinations & chin of that punk, Shane Mosley.

The heart & fighting spirit of the detestable Fernando Vargas.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you started this thread as some sort of therapy.

For some reason I have never been a David Tua and Lennox Lewis fan.

Lewis...general consistency in his later career. Good right hand and
an ability to adapt and to evolve. Plus he avenged both his losses.
Convincingly.

Tuas..a hard chin, massive popping sudden power in every punch.
While easily out boxed by those better and some times taller, he had
thate instant sudden concious ending power to win the fight.

John-John Molina (Wow, TF, you are really giving me an insight into my pro-Oscar psyche, here  ).

He fought to win...every damn time.

grudgingly- difficult to like SRL for massaging the terms of his fights to suit him, at the same time I grudgingly respect him, I mean why not make sure the game's rigged to your best interests, if you can get away with it? the phrase 'never give a sucker an even break' comes to mind and SRL had plenty of suckers lined up over the years.

grudgingly- i didn't like the way Hopkins' output was so limited in his final days at 160, that he had to spoil etc so much, especially when he did it to Hoaward Eastman who i wanted to beat him. however, grudglingly i had to respect the superb footwork and ring generalship that enabled him to do it

grudgingly- Sven Ottke. same deal. dude didn't make for exciting fights, but my god did he make the most out of his talents, and ensure he ended his career without undue damage and with the maximum bank balance anyone with his slightly limited talent could have hoped for out of boxing.

never really liked Holyfielld but i have to grudgingly respect the man's fanaticism.

John Ruiz....for attaining a HW championship belt in spite of any reason on earth that he should have ever even been allowed in the same room with such a trinket.

I've looked all over my house and I'm sure I don't have one. But somehow against all odds John Ruiz has one.

I want one, and many people here have opined that they too feel that I should eventually get what's coming to me.

With that in mind, I am pinning my hopes that the government will perhaps provide me my own Heavweight championship belt....... as part of the new goverment Bailout plan.

Mike Tyson's power-to-handspeed ratio. At Heavyweight, that was special, special material.

Considering how often poor old Buzzy has been bounced around in here, you have to admire the old guys sheer determination in trying to convince us he actually knows the first thing about boxing.

My favourite Buzz moments:

(1) The time he announced he was a junior boxing historian. OK, he had the sense to make the claim in the 'Other Sports' section but it was still a classic moment.

(2) After encouraging granberry to go overboard and, as a direct result dozens of threads in here turned into shite (OK, I wasn't completely innocent and enjoyed goading granberry), instead of standing up to the guy, he had to get another moderator to do what he didn't have the nads to do himself.

(3) Encouraging Bazza to develop into a megalomaniac until Shep had to shoot him. This was Buzz' finest moment and was a win-win situation for everyone (except Bazza). Buzz got to take over as #1 moderator in here (what a proud moment that must have been for him) and we got to see Bazza in total meltdown.

:D

Collins the very reason I have become an "Assistant apprentice Junior Historian 3rd Class" is due to my paying close attention to your contributions.

And Mr B has not been banned, he's simply too busy to post these days, his time completely occupied by taking copious notes of your posts, for posterity and of course for further study at the institute.

Nice one. I also never liked Joel but he does have some skills.

Gatti's heart. Unlike most I was not a Gatti fan (due to the Gamache incident) but damn I did have to admire how he always came back fighting and would take his beating to the very end.

Buzz, your memory is getting more selective by the month. During the period I was talking about and which you remember well, granberry got a one month ban from AntonS, the guy who had to come in and clean up the mess when you found the task beyond your 'talents'.

And there is no way Paddy Dolan would ever be allowed to join the Maltby Miner's Welfare Institute. He might be allowed to attend Ladies Night for a gossip session. Mind you, some of those pit wives have arms on them like a hock of ham so he'd have to watch his manners.

:D

i hated roy jones for his ridiculous talent. but i loved other boxers because of their ..lesser..talent. it makes no sense. some guys just get up my nose. look at hamed. i was so glad to watch his abilities evaporate. i think its arrogance and over confidence that i hate..attributes i do not have (but perhaps deep down wished i did). its the same in every sport i watch.
