Glass Jawed Success

Given the comments a few are spouting about Amir Khan and the fact his chin prevents any long term success at elite level I wondered who was the most successful glass chinned fighter.
SRL once said RJJ could "never catch too well" way back when he was an Amateur.
He'd be a runner if there is consensus he was chinny all along, just too elusive to be caught.

I'm not saying he was "glass-chinned" but Tito was bounced off the canvas by some pretty average guys.

Whoops,
Maybe RJJ.
Always thought his small head made for a less than sturdy chin.

Was Herol Graham shown to have a glass chin do we think? He was mega-elusive at his peak, I don't really remember him catching one clean until Kalambay had him all over the shop and then Jackson iced him and then Brewer took him out as well.
Someone will say Lennox Lewis but they will be wrong.

Its a difficult question to answer but anyone at the elite level who cant take a punch wont last too long. The best fighters can take punches but the accumulation over several rounds is what can finally send them to the canvas which doesnt make them glass chinned. Against the best you are bound to get hit and its how you recover from a punch flush on that will determine along with all the other factors whether you will have success at the highest levels. Khan is without doubt very skilled and has bags of talent but he cant take punches which is why many of us doubt he can succeed with the elite. He doesnt like body punches either, Gomez really hurt him.

Roger Mayweather had good sucess even after losing in a round to Rocky Lockridge , and a few fights later he was KO'd in 2 by Julio Cesar Chavez.
Roger went on to win world titles at light welter, even more surprising he went the full 12 against Kostya Tszyu.

Mayweather retired in 10 in the rematch against Chavez, and yes the Kosta fight was pretty poor to watch.
Saying that though when he was on form Roger was good to watch. He dominated Vinny Pazienza in the fight before Chavez.

I liked the Black Mamba, he looked like a nutcase, which always helped. Downloaded a good few of his fights. There was another impressive fight of his, will have to try and remember it.
As for the thread, yes there have been guys who get hit and go down, but Amir got wiped out. He cannot take a shot.
Mayweather was dead at the weight against Lockridge and struggled to find his feet up at lightweight. Then he shocked Mexican puncher Rene Arrendondo to win the WBC light-welterweight title and enjoyed a fine little reign. He really did a number on the overrrated, overprotected, over-brash Vinny Paz. It was was a beautiful night: Roger kicked the arse of Lou Duva at the final bell, too.

Floyd Patterson. Joe Louis was also a bit chinny but he got up and dished out the worst kind of payback.

Beat me to it. Patterson did very well with a less than world class chin.

Oh yeah i remember that, Duva got a cut eye.
Lou used to get far to involved when his boxer lost, he was a very good trainer, but his temper let him down on numerous occasions.

I disagree on Jones, I think he took enough bumps to show he has a decent chin, not McCullough esque but decent.
Tommy Morrison did okay with his poor chin. Patterson would be my shout though, but again hard to call him "chinny" Ali wasn't a huge puncher but he took some whacks of him.
I think it is only really David Haye and Wlad Klitchsko who you can call properly "chinny" who became the #1 in the devision. By properly chinny, I mean even if non punchers catch them right - they will go... and even so, it is still a tough thing to categorise.
There have been loads of chinny "champions" - like Morrison, Hide, Paul Silky Jones etc.

What about Archie Moore, ko'd plenty of times, ko'd in 1round, but 1 of the best 175lbers ever for most people
I don't think Patterson's chin was china he just exposed himself quite allot. Delahoya got floored a few times in his early fights. Benn got ko'd by a jab. Terry norris probably had a dodgy chin. Kenny Norton got taken out early a few times. Dempsey was ko'd in 1round.

Any mention of Hearns?
Rocking and rolling many times, and KOd when winning fights - Leonard 1, Barkley
But what a legend..
How about Bruno? Terrible whiskers but became a world champ, though I think it was more down to stupidity than a glass jaw.
Wish he'd learnt how to hold on or take a knee.
Wlad and Patterson were good shouts.

As an amateur Mark Breland was nigh on unbeatable.
As a pro he always had that 'fragile' look to me.
Terry Norris too.
Hugely impressive offensive fighter but always susceptable if caught cleanly.

Patterson"s issue was not his chin! I believe it was his legs, one was shorter than the other thus causing a balance problem. The peek-a-boo style minimized this physical flaw, thus he didn't need
to dance like Robinson, Pep and Ali.

The thing that almost all the names mentioned have in common is a good punch ... a kinda `get out of jail free` card to play ... Khan does not

Julian Jackson had the ultimate 'get out of jail' punch. Hr just couldn't find it against McCullum
