Can Hatton claim to be the p4p king if he beats Pacquaio ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLJiLXdD ... annel_page

Ricky Hatton reckons that if he beats Manny Pacquaio, he will be seen as the new p4p king of boxing.

But with his fairly recent to defeat to Mayweather in our minds, can he really claim himself to be the new p4p king if he beats Pacquaio or is he decieving himself with having those assumptions

Thoughts please

It takes more than beating the p4p no 1 to become the p4p no 1, but combined with his other achievements, a win over Pacman should put him in the top five.

Nope!

Beating the P4P #1 does not automatically make you the P4P #1. De La Hoya was chanting the same thing in the run up to his fight with the Pac Man if i remember correctly, but would anyone seriously have considered him the P4P #1 had he won?

It may seem odd (on paper form at least!), but Marquez would have to be instated as the P4P #1. Hopkins would be #2 and if he beats Adamek, which i am sure he will on points if they meet, then he'd have to be in at #1. I'd still want to put Cotto and Mosley above Hatton, but Hattons victory would have to be respected and should see him hold a top position, so Hatton at #3 then if he wins. If he wants the #1 spot, he has to beat Cotto or Mosley IMO, Marquez just wont do it unless B-HOP retires or loses to Adamek! Jeez this P4P malarkey aint half complicated :DD

No, I'd have him in the mix of the top 3/4 but JMM is number one in my eyes if he beats Pac.

Pac is number one at the moment IMO

Nope. There are plenty of serious contenders he would need to beat at LW first, let alone beating a few welters.

No, if Sharmba Mitchell had knocked out Mayweather back in 2005 would he have been P4P#1? Nup, it doesn't work like a normal title mainly because it's based on peoples opinions.

He can claim it, but nobody will share the opinion. I can't honestly say beating a man who hasn't had a competitive fight above junior lightweight would make Hatton #1. He has to beat JMM or Cotto too to be #1 IMO.

I agree, you can make claims, but ultimately the boxing public will decide whether your fit to recieve an honour, which is generally outside the influence of the boxing establishment and the governing bodies. The p4p title is a contencious issue with many boxing fans, because it's all about opinions, but i feel that there is a consensus of opinion that says that Pacquaio and Marquez are the main fighters at this moment in time and that Pacquiao just edges Marquez for that p4p title.

Hatton is a very good fighter, with good wins over Tszyu, castillo and Malignaggi and has been considered the man at 140lbs for many years and i would rate him in the top five of all current fighters. However, i feel that his defeat to Mayweather, even though it was at 147lbs, has dented Hatton's reputation to a degree, where even a win over Pacquaio will not see his stock rise too much, despite the fact that it would be considered an excellent victory.

With all due respect to Pacquaio, he has'nt yet proved himself at the higher weights, because in IMO, De La Hoya was shot to pieces and was always going to struggle making the weight. Then having to cope with the consequences of his inactivity, coupled with his advancing years, made me not suprised at all, with regards to the manner of his defeat to Pacquaio.

Pacquaio put up an excellent performance against Diaz, but i would hardly call Diaz a top "elite" fighter and i'm not talking anything away from Pacquaio, just pointing out that his victories over De La Hoya and Diaz, may give a false impression of how succesful we will be against true elite fighters at the higher weights. I think that Diaz was made for Pacquaio and De La Hoya was a "gimme" fight.

It's difficult to know who will come out on top for this fight. Pacquaio's speed of hands and movement will cause Hatton no end of problems, but i doubt whether Pacquaio has the strenght or power to hurt Hatton or wear him down significantly. Hatton may cut up and bruise in this fight, but the interesting thing, will be to see how Pacquaio copes with Hattons power, work rate and attrition.

JMM beat Pac Twice , imo and many others so Hatton would only be in the top 10 in my book.

If he can not beay a top 5 147 fighter he ain't even top 10!

All he has done is beat KT.

He is not top anything P4P - take away his fan base and he would not be in the top 20!

Lazcano - Maligannaggggggggi - Urano and Collazo??

No no no!

:D

The way he depatched Castillo was quite impressive DG

I would add that fight to the one against Tzsyu

A shot to shit castillo does npot count...

Ndgoudgo(?O) beat him!

There are no prime fighters on his record!

They were all either old shot or never any good to begin with.

Hatton is the new DLH!

Handpicking MOFO!

Handpick Cotto or Mosley!

:D

I agree that both were past their individual primes.....

But perception is everything and at the time, his wins over Tzsyu and Castillo and the manner of those victories made boxing stand up and take notice, particularly in America

Can you think of a better or more succesful fighter at 140lbs in the last few years ?

No way, he has to have another 1 or 2 good wins after this against Moseley, Cotto or even the Holt/Bradley winner (just to clear up 140).

Ask the man on the street however and they will tell you his is P4P 1, thanks to his constant brainwashing everytime he is in front of a camera. "For Ricky Hatton to win the Pound for Pound title by beating Manny P would leave Ricky Hatton nothing else to achieve."

You said ;ast few years so I said COTTO! Cotto is a better braver more risk taking fighter..

Check this out.

Cotto oppponents

Mosley*
Margarito*
Judah*
Quintanta* ( when he was hot!)
Torres*
Corley*
Uktal*
Branco*
Randall*
Pinto*
N'dou*
Kid Diamond*
* Denotes still a live threat!

Hatton opponents
PBF ( Ko Loss!)
Lazcano
Castillo
Maliganaggi
Maussa
*Collazo
Oliveria
Michael Stewart

Cotto more a risk taker.AND the better all round fighter.

A mix of Welter fights and Lt Wekter fights, who took the RISKS???

Hatton in not pound for pound anything until he beats Pacaman and a Cotto or Mosley.. Not JMM who while great is still in my book a Superfeather.

SHRUGS SHOULDERS IN APATHY.....

DG how you can argue that Cotto has a better resume than Hatton at 140 is beyond me. :witzend:

Also Hatton loses to PBF and Cotto to Marg (I also thought he lost to Mosely and should have got done by Torres as well at 140 and very nearly did) and the fact hatton completely destroyed Magg when cotto at times looked ordinary and yet you bang on how many level above hatton cotto is.

The facts speak differently.

Also another thing thats a bit ridiculous on here is how many fuckers are wise after the event, Kostya was shot, well you lot didnt say that prior to the fight, Castillo was shot, same, and Oscar was shot...again very few people were this officious and knowledgable prior to the fight.

Too many hindsight predicters on here that change their tune post event.

Be honest in your appraisals please, your only cheating yourself :TU:

Answer me this,

WHO IS THE MORE ACCOMPLISHED?

Who is the better fighter?

Who takes the toughest challenges?

1) Cotto
2) Cotto
3) Cotto
