I just thought I would dedicate a thread to famous boxers from my great state
George Foreman---------needs no further explanation
Tex Cobb--- while not a great per se, he was an entertaining fighter and had a decent acting career
ernie terrell--------HW champ in the 60's known for his ali fight, calling him "clay"----------also he was the brother of R&B songstress tammi terrell
Curtis Cokes-------great fighter, great coach, great guy
Tony AYala---perfect example of a guy with talent that pissed it away
Quincy Taylor---overlooked southpaw former champ from Dallas
Don Curry-------probably, along with paulie ayala, fort worth's best known boxer
any others?

Also Sam McVea from Waelder. Baseball great Rube Foster who helped smuggle Johnson into Canada was from around Bryan. He, Sam, and Jack were best buds with Sam traveling with Jack to France and what not. All raised in a 150 mile triangle and probably spoke the same regional dialect which bonded them.

Roy Harris from Cut and Shoot was a ranked heavy in 1960 when he fought Liston.

Gene Mad Dog Hatcher from Fort Worth. Knocked off undefeated well regarded Johnny Bumphus for the 140 title.

Ernie Terrell ain't from Texas. Cleve Williams fought out of Houston, but born in Georgia I think.

Jesus Chavez! Born in Mexico but he is Austin's greatest fighter. Do yourself a favor and watch "Split Decision". It's a documentary about his life and boxing career. Any boxing fan would enjoy this story.

Speaking of, his trainer, Richard Lord born somewhere in the DFW metro area, Dallas probably, and ended up in Austin with a near perfect record, only one loss.

Rockin' Robin Blake a very exciting mid 80s contender out of Levelland, Texas. Someone mentioned Tony Ayala, but his brother Mike put up a heck of a scrap against Little Red Lopez' title in San Antone, and their father and another brother boxed out of there, and probably their kids too.

James Kirkland born and bred in Austin as was his trainer Ann Wolfe, noted for making Lailia Ali spend her entire career ducking her. Ms. Wolfe who can probably KO 75% of the men in this world. Very scary lady not to be trifled with by the typical fool.

Also Brian Vera who fought Kirkland recently also born and bred in Austin. Very unusual as the town more noted for academia, UT sports, music, and high tech, not boxing.

Finally, big shout for Too Tall Jones' perfect 6-0, 5 KO record in his brief foray into the division with dreams after Ali retired. Too Tall from Dallas.

If this is a "born and bred" thread, Too Tall Jones doesn't belong on the list. Too Tall was born in born and bred in Tennessee. He didn't come to Texas until drafted by Dallas out of Tennessee State in 1974.

- My friend, Too Tall was big enough to be annexed and incorporated.

Still, he became such a Dallas icon with Landry having a bias towards stocking the team with Texas stars, the mistake was mine assuming that he was from Texas.... 8)
