Fighters Who You Did A 180 On...

Let's name some fighters whom you were once a fan of, but they did something (or, perhaps, a series of things) to turn you against them. On a brighter note, let's go the other way, while we're at it, & name some fighters you once didn't care for, but came to eventually like.
Fan To Critic:
Roy Jones
-Oh, the forum battles a Roy fan had to endure during the late-90's! The sleepless nights, the trench warfare, the perennial state of being in a shrunken band of brothers cheering for Roy on a board --- any board --- full of Roy-haters. That all changed for me when he was revealed a 'roid user :(
Evander Holyfield
-See above. All the respect for that courage, grit & tenacity melted away...
Floyd Mayweather
-"I'm retired --- no, I'm not --- yes, I am --- no, I'm not --- yo, kiss my ass. Money, baby!" A promising young pound-for-pound talent oozing class in the ring developed over the years into a brash, conceited, asshole. I was once quite the bandwagon man, but he alienated me, circa 2003-04, when he started to get too big for his britches.
Critic-To-Fan:
Juan Manuel Marquez
-Initially a big supporter of younger brother Rafael, I found his older sibling to be cold & distant, at first. It didn't help that I was dazzled by Pacquiao & wanted him to best everyone in sight, circa-2003, either. His class & decency, as well as his perennially under-rated status (until recent times) have shed new light on a man now ranked among my very favourites.
Lennox Lewis
-Fought everyone, beat everyone, was the last true champ the Heavyweight division has ever --- & may ever --- see. Was one of the few fighters of his generation who appeared to care as much about legacy as money, & isn't that refreshing? All of these factors eventually eclipsed what I considered to be a rude, arrogant, typical would-be high-brow Brit. I was wrong.
Michael Moorer
As a ten-year-old, the first fight I ever saw was Moorer-Foreman. An instant love for George, who quickly became my all-time favourite fighter, manifested itself in an outward contempt for the man who pummeled him for much of their 1994 encounter. As I became a fan of Holyfield, I took great satisfaction from his drubbing of Moorer, whose slacker attitude to conditioning did not impress a young fan. I've since felt sorry for the way his career has progressed, & his under-rated status as a forgotten fighter of serious ability endears him to me, somewhat. Soft-spoken, classy fellow, for the most part, too.

enzo maccarinello fan to critic
i thought he had amazing ability at one point baceuase i caught him before he won his title, but then he started stuttering on teh challenges trhen his complete disrespect to my fave brittish fighter david haye put me off completly
Amir khan fan to critic
he talks to much shit and has an over inflated sence of self
Bernard hopkins critic to fan
i got bored of his style but since his move to LH ive appreciated his little wrinkles in his game and thoughly enjoy his fights now even rewatching the old ones
prince nassem Critic to fan
thought teh guy spouted to much shit but now i enjoy watching him (never could before when he was everywere)
maybe ill end up liking khan when hes retired liek how i like nassem now

v. klitschko
fan to critic to fan
i thought he was very good while got a lot of bad posts
on the boards before the lewis fight. i believed he was
seriously hurt in the byrd fight and accepted that even
a prize fighter might but does not have to go beyond a
certain point in risking his health ...
then i got annoyed by his announcement of fights and
getting hurt in training and the same again some months
later. what truly pissed me was his attitude of just doing
a little championship fight in between against peter before
running for politician. i found that disrespectful and a
disgrace.
but he won so convincingly after not having fought in
years in his first fight back ... fan again. believing now
that it was really all just bad luck with the injuries ... all
hats off to him. nobody before had shown peter his
limits in such dramatic fashion and the guy was, well,
the WBC champ at that time ...

if ever there was one fighter in the modern game who I could have teach me, or recommend to upcoming fighters for Coach & Trainer it would be Jeremy Williams! Excellent fighter & coach/trainer. A very good modern great.

I hope he gets his shot one day, he's a big puncher and exciting fighter. Much respect
??? Williams had plenty of shots.

Yes!!! I remember before he "defended" against Shannon Briggs it seemed like all I'd read was "Why is Lewis defending against a bum like Briggs?" I'll always believe that Lewis & his team were very aware of the fact that Briggs was linear (or lineal) champion and that winning that linear title would be a big plus for his legacy. It seemed like Ring magazine was the only press that recognized that at the time.

Gotta agree here, but for a bit of a different reason. Roy was essentially my all-time favorite since the Olympic debacle, but when I actually thought about the idea of him raising fighting cocks, it became almost impossible for me to root too hard for him.

yes, that roy jones is a real piece of crap.

please tell me who your favorite fighters are. i'm sure they're fine upstanding people outside of the ring, just like the two of you are.
jones has done a lot of good outside of the ring but nobody ever wants to mention it.

truth is jones was the best fighter for around 10 years solid regardless of what some say. Hate so see how he is going about things now but in some ways gaining more respect as he is now on a level playing field to the rest now and still fighting thought when the old reflexes went he would be out of the ring quick.

Hey, if you've got stars in your eyes as you listen to rap tunes, power to you. I happen to be appalled by animal cruelty.
I guess you're just the bigger man, able to rise above that.

i'm guessing the rap tunes response is some kind of racist remark towards blacks. i probably am the bigger man but i'm also disgusted by animal cruelty. the main reason i think you don't like jones is because of the color of his skin.

Irene isn't the most enlightened poster on here, but I've never seen anything he has written which suggests he is a racist.

Hate myself for addressing this kind of idiocy, but, like a piece of chocolate you know's bad for you, I just can't resist...
A) My topic is entitled, "Fighters Who You Did A 180 On..." I've listed six fighters I either was --- or became --- a fan of. All but one are black. Several posters here will back me when I say I've always maintained George Foreman is my all-time favourite fighter. I even mentioned that fact in this very thread.
B) I want you to point out a statement which you feel indicates I am anti-black. You have thousands of my posts to choose from. Have at it. I want to see what you come up with.
C) Jones' rap career has long-been the source of much derision (I have to admit, I have enjoyed some of the tunes, & never attacked his singing pursuits when I was a fan of his), so, in gunning for you, I over-simplified you. What that has to do with colour is beyond me --- & just about everyone, bar you. In mentioning his singing, my implication was you are overlooking animal cruelty because he's a star. Get it, now?
D) Guess why I don't like you, Bjer? It's because you're an idiot.

I concede I don't literally know what happened in Lewiston, Maine, as suredly as you do, Collins, so perhaps I am indeed, "not the most enlightened poster on here." Seems you've taken a real shine to me of late, & I know you like your whipping boys (tireless, ad nausem assaults on Buzz & HomicideHenry we've all quietly endured), but I nonetheless appreciate the back-handed honesty.
Fuk no, I'm not racist. I'm sure we can agree on one thing, at a minimum --- BJer's assertion is as dumb as it gets.

Irene, do you mind if I call you "granberry-lite"?
"Irene" just sounds so ridiculous when addressing a man (I assume you are a man?).
(PS, HomicideHenry makes you seem almost knowledgable when it comes to boxers of the past, so he is of some use, if only as a yardstick)
(PPS, it seems Buzz likes to be known as "Rob" now. Just to keep you in the loop)

The way it's starting to take shape, Collins, is you have more of a problem with me than you do with my views.
That's fine --- I have more of a problem with the absurd levels of pro-Ali propaganda than I do with the great man himself. Of course, you're selling yourself short by labelling me Granberry-lite. That's a little glib, isn't it?
On a sidenote, & in all seriousness, you're being petty trying to get a rise out of me calling me, "Irene." It does not bother me, as appears to be your intention. I just think it stacks up as kind of weak. If your problem is with my views, then have at them. You've really come out of nowhere lately, & seem to be doing your best to end what has always been cordial discussion between you & I. Is it really as straight-forward as differing views on one fighter? You tell me.
We could always discuss one of many other great boxers.

it's funny how people like irene get offended when something is said about them that isn't true but it's ok when they do it to other people. if you look above, she implied that i support animal cruelty. believe it or not, i don't. so in turn i took from her comment that she was racist and just like a woman she got very emotional and started calling me names. it's ok baby. i'm just kidding with you. settle down and everything will be good.

Very coy, Collins. Perhaps if you contributed half the amount of time to talking boxing you do to obsessively hunting whoever constitutes your flavour-of-the-month, we'd see some of that boxing insight you obviously think yourself capable of.
Why don't you tell us all about the evils of Buzz & HomicideHenry...again. It hasn't been heard in over a week, I believe.

Now, now. Let's have a bit of parliamentary procedure in here, as Chris Eubank likes to say. There's no need to get excited, mate. Rob and HomoHenry both enjoy the attention I pay them. Ask them if you don't believe me.

Why is mummy and daddy fighting ?:(
For me...I would have to say
Oscar De Lahoya.
During the mid 90s I just was never a fan, he seemed to annoy me.
I never watched his fights in a great deal, I felt he got lucky against
Whitacker. I also was happy that Mosley beat him twice. Then I started
to become a fan about the time Hopkins beat him. I liked his intelligence,
the way he made alot of money for him and those around him as well
as his desire to get in their with any one.
Roberto Duran.
He was always my least favourite of the Vegas Four, but of late I have
really started to appreciate his style and his passionate in ring and
out of ring persona.
