I received an email inquiry from a gent who is the current Election Committee Chair for the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Seems he has contacted boxing historians and old media types in the past to ask: "Was Max Baer Jewish ?" Nobody could provide him with concrete facts on the subject, yet old Baer fans would often inquire, "Why isn't Max Baer in the IJSHOF ?" To which the committee would reply, "He wasn't Jewish."

It was decided that Max could be nominated as a Jewish ICON, rather than a true Jewish sportsmen, largely based on the marketing campaign behind the Schmeling bout, and his continued support of Jews during his lifetime.

However, when I replied to the Election Committee Chair, I provided him with irrefutable proof that both of Max's grandparents were Jewish, therefore his Father was Jewish, therefore Max was half Jewish.

Soooo, twould appear that this October, Max Baer's name will appear on the annual ballot sent to members of the Committee.

Judaism is a religion not a 'race'.

Not sure you can be half jewish any more than you can be half christian or half muslim.

- You must be a saint to keep madcap Maxie's memory alive, however, you need to know that Jews don't calculate Jewish heritage like Christians do their own. The orthodox sects insist that the mother must be Jewish for the child to be considered Jewish.

Generally this view is respected if not always believed by the reformed modern sects that predominate in numbers, but fall short in influence. So that will be the primary issue discussed for the election.

Yeah, I watched Joe take him apart just last week. Max started slow and clumsy, but he had some good spots, one in particular that I don't know how Joe survived given Maxie's reputation of power.

100%, as it is a religion not a race.

There is no such thing as applying a 'racial degree' to any religion that accepts converts.

As such, jews come in all shapes, sizes and colours.

Thanks mate ! Yes I'm aware of the fact of maternal heritage in Orthodox sects. I'm just hoping the committee is composed of predominantly reformed modern sect members eh ?

Nah I'm no saint, I just think Max was a helluva guy, both in and outside the ring. I can't count the number of times I've fallen off my chair laughing at his latest antics on the old newspapers articles. Plus of course, I'm still determined to continue to refute all the misinformation out there about him.

Since you seem to be quite knowledgeable on the subject, if Max's GF was a Jew from Alsace-Lorraine, France and his GM was a Jewess who came from Bohemia (Czech Republic) would the only way the could have communicated been in Yiddish ?
