Anyone remember Doug DeWitt ?

As I can recall Doug fought with his face some of the time,but was a stand up guy.
In a 12 + year career he was stopped only 4 times.

1. An unbeaten [32-0-2] James Toney
2. A 25-1 puncher in Nigel Benn
3. Respected WBA Middleweight Champion [45-3-1]Sumbu Kalambay
4.Jose Quinones


As I remember him,that Kid had a good chin on him.

Very tough guy, he gave Hearns a better fight than expected and put some good wins together towards the end of his career, the win over Hilton was a pretty big upset at the time. The KO loss to Quinones was a shock as DeWitt had the look of a middleweight Chuvalo back then. His fight with Benn was very entertaining.

He also had one of the flattest noses I've ever seen.

Doug DeWitt was one of those fighters who for some reason, got alot of TV exposure. Some of his performances were really good, like the time he busted up wide swinging and favored Matthew Hilton, with short punches on the inside, or his thrilling 13th rd victory over Tony Thornton. He looked awful against Milton McCrory though.

I liked watching Dewitt fight.
He was a solid fighter. Threw good combinations, good chin, fast hands.
He was involved in two fights with a guy named Ben Serrano that I couldnt figure out. One he lost and the other which was televised was a draw.Some guys , without big names just give a guy problems.
Dewitt fought a guy I used to spar with named Lenny Lapaglia.They had a war and Doug got the nod.Real good fight.
Dewitt was a throwback honest hard working fighter. I didnt see his victory over Matthew Hilton. Must have been a good fight. Those two always brought it.

That was a good fight. LePaglia was a pretty tough guy as well.

He was. Real good puncher, but also faster than folks realized.We trained out of a long gone gym in Chicago named US Arena. At Division and Damen.Gentrified area now I guess.
Louie Mateo and Johnny Lira, and Johnny Heard trained there also.
But, I digress , back to Dewitt.

Paz vs Doug woulda been a heckuva scrap.

I saw DeWitt's KO loss to Quinones on TV, and it was devastating. Quinones was nothing too special, either. I think it was maybe that fight that (should have) told us that DeWitt, however entertaining, wasn't top-class.

Never saw DeWitt in a bad fight. He got a lot of exposure because his fights were entertaining. WBO title win over Hilton was a bit of a shocker because Hilton was a pretty highly regarded ex- junior middleweight champ and a fairly big banger. DeWitt wasn't known as a great boxer, but he essentially jabbed his way to victory in that one, turning Hilton's face ugly. What was amazing is DeWitt was coming off getting absolutely hammered a year or so earlier in a title shot against the very underrated Kalambay. The Hilton fight was his last big win because DeWitt was shelled by Benn the next time out
