Watching the fights last night involving Andy Lee,Katie Taylor,Bernard Dunne and Jim Rock,i dont think i have seen fans get behind their home fighters as much as the irish do.They might come to watch Dunne but all irish fans get behind each and every boxer,which is a credit to the people of ireland and make me proud to be irish.

Irish fans are the best, you would not get an atmosphere like that anywhere else in the world.

They were great.....

the fans were unbelievable, I couldnt believe how much they got behind Katie Taylor. The atmosphere and her performance was very surprising, she was fantastic :)

Now can't wait till future Brian Peters bill's and when allegedly Promotions go to Belfast with Marty Rogan and the Olympians.

They were good but its a shame they didn't say the rugby was going to be on the big screens because you would have got loads of people for all of the fights because the arena was nearly empty for Paddy Barnes's fight

I couldnt get my mates out of the pub to go early as they were watchin the rooogby - I therefore missed the Barnes, Moylett and most of Jim Rocks fight

Some idiot behind me was shouting "Andy throw the right hand you've never done it all night"

a great night, really felt like it was being part of something, like we all won something that night...i'll never be at another boxing event like it

+1 . i was at the football match when mcateer scoed against the dutch and i have to say this was better again

The atmosphere was awesom, better than any I have experienced before. The rugby detracted a little from the Rock fight but apart from that it just added to the occasion.

I thought the rugby detracted as well - and tbh I was kind of hoping Ireland would lose so that the media focus would be on BD!

I only caught the last round of the Rock fight and was gutted!

Thats terrible sligo although i am not the biggest rugby fan i still enjoyed them winning , if only our soccer team could capture the imagination like that. I watched the boxing locked so i made it more like a dream tbh. Did they show the rugby in the 02?
I think both occasions will be talked about for a long time and that exact date will be remembered for to of the biggest achievements in irish sport

Yep the Rugby was on big screens above the ring.

I know its bad but I care a lot more about boxing and promoting boxing than ten grand slams - like it or not the grand slam gave the D4 media just the excuse they needed to stay within their comfort zone and neglect coverage of boxing!

I agree the amount of coverage rugby gets on rte is disgraceful for such a minority sport. Altough boxing is also a minority sport it definatley deserves more coverage especially because of the high Irish boxing is on at the moment . I wonder is there a connection between the the location of the rte headquaters and the reason it gets so much airtime?

I wasn`t there, but have heard it was a top night. I saw the fight on youtube, an absolute cracker.

Syndney 2003 when we finally won the Rugby world cup has to be my "live" highlight. Emotions were running high that day.

From checking on line the feats were only 10 days apart in 1948 with the Grand Slam being achieved on 13 March and then Rinty Monaghan beat Paterson on the 23 March with the world Flyweight championship at stake.

There is a link between the location fo the HQ being in Roogby's heartland - there is also a link between the type of middleclass Blackrock College graduted emploees that RTE takes on and the amount of rugby that is spewed out fron that source.

I know not one person - NOT ONE - that I grew up with that played roogy yet if you were to scan the sports pages of the Irish papers you would swear that it was the biggest sport in Ireland!

In fairness where I'm from (Tipperary), boxing is a real, real minority sport where as Rugby is quite major.
The difference in media coverage in the papers between rugby and boxing would be the difference in participation and interest(if not more so) where I'm from so it's understandable for me.

So moving to Middlesbrough it seems to me boxing is a lot more common in England.
