Bernard Dunne - Regular/Super Champion - WTF?!

Great win over Cordoba, and a seemingly nice guy.
But come on, do you feel he's a world champion with the WBA? I don't - I think Cabellero is.
How the hell can we have two WBA champions? If that is allowed by the boxing fan then just wait for the IBF, WBC and WBO to follow suit.
It we get to the stage where there's eight "world champions" a division then I am stopping watching this sport.
Bollocks.

I'd give him a pass - sort of. It was an epic, it was a world class fight, and an excellent scalp. A fighter who has beaten Caballero.
But that doesn't change the fact that Caballero is the WBA and IBF champ.
Multiple world champs in the same weight is a reality, but multiple champs in the same organisation is pushing it.
Still, Dunne has his foot in the door at world level, and has emerged as a marketable name, someone that the proven "elite" would probably want to fight.
2 ways to erase controversy - beat Caballero, one of the most difficult and avoided fighters out there. Fight an on-his-last-legs Vazquez, the regularly hospitalised WBC, lineal, Ring mag champ.
A lot to ask of Dunne though.

Great win, a win deserving of being called a world champion, if Cordoba was the lineal champion in the WBA, which is isn't and wasn't. I may be old fashioned here, but come on, how can we class Dunne as a world champion, when like you say, Caballerro is the IBF and WBA champion of the world? Horrible.
The Cordoba win should make Dunne mandatory for Cabellero - I think that's fair reward.

i agree the wba is an absoloute joke but at the end of the day . a contender for foty would never have happend if it wasnt for that belt . anyway vazquez is the lineal champ and everyone else is just a contender . vazquez holds the ring mag belt which is the real champ imo and caballero dunne juanma etc are all just contenders for that belt which is the reality of havin all these alphabet soups . but at the end of the day fights and money are made through titles . the normal public dont really give a fornicate to be hounest

I just feel that is Dunne is recognised as a world champion by the boxing fans, as well as the public, then the other organisations will follow suit. I can't wait for the day when we get a IBO South Pacific "regular champion". Or an elimantor for the WBA's 15th place ranking.

you have to realise this is not dunnes fault . he beat a very good fighter in the best division in boxing . the boxing organisations are a bit of a joke espescially the wba , but thats boxing at the end of the day . i just go by the rings ratings

I don't blame Dunne, as I did congratulate him, but whether the WBA are crap or not, I don't think Dunne is a world champion.

I don't fully agree, though I can see what you're saying.
Caballero is a unified champ and I'm sure he's eager to get a shot at Vazquez. I doubt he ever gets the fight - Vazquez has risked his health enough in these hard 122-pound title fights. If he can't get the fight, it's not his fault and he's done everything else - stopping IBF champ Molitor in Canada, stopping WBA champ Sithchatchawal in Thailand, outslugging a young Ponce de Leon in California.
I think CC deserves some recognition. Vazquez was a paper champ before he came good. He lost to Larios for the WBC title (great fight, by the way), won the vacant IBF belt, struggled to hold on to it (incl one suspect decision win), classed as the weakest of the champs. OK he got revenge on Larios, improved, but I think larios was fvcked from weight making and 2 wars with McCullough. This made Vazquez The Man, and he won on a cut as well, a cut partly caused by head clash. His 1st challenger was a former flyweight, and then the great fights (Gonzalez, Marquez 3x) had all come up from bantam (OK they were big bantams).
Im not trying to run down Vazquez, 1 of my fave fighters. He's shown awesome perseverence, took the risks at the right time, and it paid off. I think he earned a place in the HOF for his wars vs quality fighters. Don't reckon Israel fights at 122 again unless a very lucrative fight comes up. If Vazquez leaves, Caballero is the boss. I think for Caballero to win his big fights in the circumstances is pretty damn impressive.

Its so bad its almost funny isn't it? whats the point of unifying if you then split your own title? Undisputed except....
What happens if a super and a regular 'unify'?

Vasquez is the champion at the weight, all the other titles are equally pointless.
Dunne is as much a World Champion as Caballero, Nishioka and Lopez.......because none of them are World Champion.

Caballero is as much champ. Vazquez is The Man, but no one apart from Marquez can fight him. Molitor was the next big thing - Caballero smashed him. Sithchatchawal had won the 2005 fight of the year (and probably the fight of this decade), and Caballero smashed him - also in his backyard.
Vazquez was a paper champ not long ago. He only fights smaller men moved up from bantam. He'd never fight Caballero, because he has taken too much punishment beating Marquez. To be The Man, he cut a dead at the weight Larios with his head and worstened it with punches. That's what made him Ring mag champ.
Everyone seems to be selling Caballero short. Multiple outstanding champions in the same weight are a reality. There are 2 at super bantam.

Lopez is a destroyer at super-bantam, I'd make him a favourite over all of the other fighters even Vazquez and Marquez who have been inactive for a year.

Agreed, very good win though, probably will end up being the highlight of Dunne's career, even though Cordoba had never won a fight outside Panama.

I just sent this e-mail to all of the contacts on this
page as I'm feeling angry this afternoon
Dear Sir,
Just a quick note to say what a load of old crap your organisation is
and that I feel you are making a farce out of the sport of boxing with
your 'Super' champions and for example having 2 world champions at
Super-Bantam. It's indefensible and ludicrous and just makes the sport
look stupid and lacking in any credibility.
Clearly you are only interested in the money and not the best
interests of the sport so I'll leave it here but just thought I'd drop
you this message to let you know how utterly rubbish I and many many
other boxing fans think you are and what a poor job you are doing
running your share of world boxing.
Regards,
James Gosnold.

just a quick question > would the munroe fans consider munroe a world champ if he beats dunne for "regular" wba title . its nonsense alright but it is boxing . having 4 title in each division is nonsense and there should only be 1 . but at the end of the day title make money and without that wba "regular" title there would be no foty contender and the money would have never been made by the boxers

I am a Munroe fan, but wouldn't count him as a world champion if he was "regular" champ. As far as I am concerned, Cabellero is champ.

I class Dunne as a world champion.
Look at it this way - KO'ing Cordoba to take the regular belt is more of an achievement than taking many of the multitude of shitty "world" belts out there.

i think that while lopez is a big puncher and very impressive, he needs more rounds before mixing it with the big 3 (vazquez, cabalero, marquez). he's promising but i feel totally overrated.

I can understand the WBA's logic behind having Celestino as the super champion but why are Nikolay Valuev, Shane Mosley, Anselmo Moreno and Brahim Asloum all "super champions" when they dont even have any other belts?

Bernard Dunne is Irish not British.
