Roach wants Cortez as ref!

Joe Cortez, the New York-born Puerto Rican referee, is the one being eyed by Freddie Roach to referee the May 2 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, the celebrated trainer from Hollywood told Manila Bulletin on Wednesday. “Cortez is strict and he will not allow Hatton’s excessive holding,” Roach said. But since Hatton’s people and fans thought that Cortez’ penchant to break up fighters will not suit the Briton’s attacking style, he won’t be surprised if Cortez’s name will not be on a list that will be submitted for appointment. “They (Hatton’s people) blamed Cortez for that loss,” said Roach. The identity of the referee and the three judges won’t be known until the final two weeks of the fight but Roach has an option. “If Cortez is not appointed, there’s Jay Nady, who is also strict like Cortez and who won’t allow too much holding.” Roach has been widely quoted that Hatton’s does a lot of holding during in-fighting and he is working hard with Pacquiao to prevent that from taking place in the actual fight. Still, Roach can’t help but express his concern over the choice of the third man on the ring.

I think this is just Roach trying to wind Hatton`s camp up before the fight .. I bet it will work also

It probably is a wind up tactic but cortez will not get this in a million years. I lost faith in him after that soto - lorenzo fight

Cortez let the crowd influence him. You could see his disgust when the American national anthem was booed. It should be like football when two opposing nations face, a foreign ref who speaks the languages should be brought in. In contrast, I don't remember him stepping in when he refed Hatton/Castillo.

Cortez gets an unjustified bad rap for the Mayweather-Hatton fight, in terms of breaking clinches he's simply implementing the rules by breaking them once the fighters clinch. It's Ricky's only fault he's so reliant on breaking/bending the rules

I do think Roach is playing mind games, but you can also be sure he wants a ref who doesn't allow Hatton to bend the rules

My problem with Cortez is not how he handled the Hatton-Mayweather fight(because he was spot on) but how he did the complete opposite in Calzaghe-Hopkins letting Hopkins hold at will. He's too inconsistent.

Both Hatton and Hopkins held, both were broken up, the difference is Hatton wants to be able to hold for as long as he wants and hit and hold, Hopkins will try and get away with that too but isn't quite as blatant. But both were broken up anyway. Hatton was warned for holding though, but maybe this is partly due to Mayweather complaining to Cortez before the fight. Cortez also made the mistake of once or twice breaking before there was a clinch, but the amount of times he had to break clinches this could be a quite an easy mistake to make

It should also be noted Cortez reffed Hatton-Castillo, he took points from Castillo for hitting on the belt line after Hatton play acted and Cortez had said the belt line was fine. I think Cortez watched his own performance and saw Hatton get away with hitting and holding and play acting and didn't want to be shown up like that a second time. Officials do make opinions of fighters after making mistakes, for instance the judges that wrongly scored Quartey-DLH to DLH went against him when he faced Tito. All in all Cortz is getting on a bit and these are hard fights to ref

Could be wrong, but I didn't think clinching was against the rules, just "excessive clinching", which is a little open to interpretation. But breaking fighters as soon as they enter a clinch sounds like a recipe for a ruined fight. What's wrong with "fight and get out!"?

Clinching is perfectly legal, as long as you are working in the clinches. That is what Hatton and plenty of other fighters do.

What is not allowed is holding, where you just tie your opponent up in order to protect yourself.

james- okay fine so 'working in clinches' is legal- what about all the times in clinches Hatton is holding and hitting then?

grab opponent's right arm with left arm, punch opponent with right hand, grab opponent's left arm with right arm, punch opponent with left hand, repeat ad nausea.

that's okay is it?

Agree a little.

Hatton just wanted to bear-hug Mayweather at times. Wheras Hopkins, at his age, does not looking to hold, but to tie up his opponents.

Big difference imo.

I don't buy for one second Hatton wanted to get on the inside, because it looked like he just wanted to wrestle, not Box

Also, If Roach is worth his salt he will KNOW THAT HATTON IS WEAK TO THE BODY..
